Less than a year ago Melbourne’s Chet Faker was just another bearded dude making beats in his Glen Iris garage.
Now he’ll be releasing his debut EP on US label Downtown Records, home to Santigold, Spank Rock and Gnarls Barkley.
Out locally through Opulent/Remote Control, Thinking In Textures – which we described as “subtle in its approach and utterly captivating on return listens” – will come out in the US on May 22, with a vinyl release scheduled for June 19.
It comes off the back of acclaimed performances at South By Southwest, where he was named an “act to watch” by the Austin Chronicle, coming in at #9 in our buzz rankings for the event.
Faker (aka Nick Murphy) recently spoke to M+N about dealing with hype: “I’m as critical as the next Melbourne musician, so I’m aware that the faster you rise, the faster you fall. The big thing for me has been trying to legitimise this hype. Trying to slow it down, but it’s got a sort of mind of its own.”
