Has Delta Goodrem Ripped Off Arcade Fire?

Is Delta Goodrem making a pitch for the hipster market?
The former Neighbours actor and co-host of the Nine Network’s The Voice has recently unleashed her comeback single, ‘Sitting On Top Of The World’, entering the ARIA singles chart at a respectable #2.
But just a cursory listen to the track – if you can stomach it – reveals more than just a passing similarity to the distinctive bass-piano riff of Arcade Fire’s 2005 single ‘Rebellion (Lies)’, named one of the "50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever” by NME.
The similarities between the two tracks were brought to our attention by former Gerling member Darren Cross, who currently records with Betty Airs and as The E.L.F., via his blog.
What do you think?

Not convinced? Here’s a mash-up from MacGeecy Project to further underscore the point:

oh delta you GREAT BIG NAUGHTY
Undoubtedly similar.
And what the fuck is with that dancing.
Delta is like the most attractive unsexy person ever.
She's beautiful and leaves me cold.
She'd almost get away with it if it was just the repetitive piano chords, as lots of songs have that, like LCD Soundsystem's 'All My Friends'.
But when she sings ''woh-oh woh-oh'' too, it's LOADS like Arcade Fire.
''Very similar with the chords but as if Delta would've heard of this no name band and ''ripped them off'' It would be impossible to create music if every song that had a similar sound to another song. A chord is a chord... no one can claim direct ownership to a chord.'' - outraged Delta fan forum member

LOL
Who the hell are The Suburbs?
I like the mash up.
Did Delta write this or a crack team of writers?

Looks like a Stepford wife. Needs to scrub off the make-up, muss up her hair, and stop smiling like a showroom dummy. Wire wrote the song 'Mannequin' about Delta.
she stole the ''get up stand up,'' line from a no name Jamaican.
I would feel sorry for her, sounds harsh, but alas she's a millionaire and she's beautiful and talented, it can't get much better.
I'm assuming it's the latter, but the thing I'm most stunned by is how undercooked the melody seems to be on first pass.
Also a little bothered by the incongruity in tone between the song (attempted ''huge''ness/wayyy earnest emotion/belting out the vocals) and video (light/sunny/whimsical)
I may be overthinking this a little.
Maybe she should of been on a desolate beach with waves crashing in the moonlight.
I prefer the mash up to either of them alone.
seconded.
Alone, one is unlistenable and the other plain boring. I made it all the way through the mash up though...
Delta co-wrote the song with some dude called John Shanks
Fixed.

I totally agree with you. At the end of the day, sharing credit and royalties is about rewarding the artists, that's why it's a battlefield worth navigating. For the Men At Work case to be a lawsuit on behalf of a fatcat publishing arm that had simply inherited or acquired a bunch of works, that's just disgusting.
POTENTIAL WITNESS FOR THE DEFENCE. FLOWERS, IT'S ALL ABOUT FLOWERS AND CANDLES
candles in the wind or a candle in the window (near the piano at 3am)

Let's be honest - there is only X amount of note and chordal combinations.
Twas it Matthew and son or whatever it's called that coyness ripped?
then release your music under a creative commons license
Delta cops a lot of flack but I'd still rip her clothes off
She's done well, considering she dumped Glenn Wheatley for her mum......
she was dating glenn wheatley? gross.
she's going out with her mum?
gross.
Better than her Mum anok.
Fair call. Maybe there's no legal case there ... i just meant that if you ''take'' more than the melody then you have less recourse to say it was an accident ... If the drums, piano, tempo, feel etc are all the same then to me its less of an accident. Combined with whatever Delta sings in place of ''Lies'' ... which is a melody similarity - though only a coupla notes...
A copyrighted song can be whatever the writers deem it to be i think ... if the guitar hook is a key element then a % may be attributed to that ... as far as i know you can't work the riff of Sweet Child O Mine into a song and claim it as your own !
True, but you could argue that guitar part is the top line melody at points.
You can't copyright a beat or a rhythm, or a two chord sequence.
I think it's something like 9 consecutive notes where it gets dodgy. I speak from experience unfortunately, when a band I managed wrote a song, and everyone who heard it pointed out it sounded like a Cliff Richard song, which it did. So we went to them (The Shadows as it turned out) and gave them some of the publishing rather than wait for it to become a hit and get shafted for 100%.
Jet got away with it, so will Delta
'Herping On Top Of The Derp'
All this has achieved is a painful Delta vs Arcade Fire mash-up being stuck in my head for the last 4 days.
What happened to this girls' looks? She used to be pretty, and now she looks like celine dion.
The piano droning over the chord progression/bass-line - I think that seals the deal.. and lo, there she is playing a piano at the end of the clip.
Both songs are going for the same thing.. but Arcade Fire got there first and that's what people liked about them, so..
