OK, so it’s no It’s A Draw by Sidewiner’s Nick Craft, but at least the theme song for AFL expansion team Greater Western Sydney (GSW) doesn’t sound like ‘Freo Heave Ho’, the diabolically contemporary theme song for the Dockers.
Harking back to the “genre’s” oompah/barber-shop traditions, ‘The Mighty Giants’ was written and produced by Melbourne songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Harry Angus (Cat Empire, Jackson Jackson), who says he wanted to create a new song that sounded old.
“I started to become interested in this idea that there exists an entirely different genre of music that is the old classic football song,” Angus said. “I began to research where some of these old classic songs had come from, to understand the mindset of the old captains and players who created these pieces of music. It became clear that the beauty of these great songs is their simplicity.”
‘The Mighty Giants’ will be unveiled at GWS’ home ground, Blacktown International Sportspark, during an NAB Cup match against Collingwood on February 18.
In related news, Eskimo Joe’s proposed new Fremantle Dockers theme song, ‘Freo Freo’, was recently outvoted by members in favour of a re-worked version of Kenny Walther’s ‘Freo Heave Ho’.

nah, its pretty good, as these things go.
Yep.
Hmmm.... this song really reminds me of the song 'Mesecina' by Goran Bregovic, as featured in the movie 'Underground', especially the horn parts.
Sorry about the long intro on this clip (that's the way the song goes). Just start listening from the 1.30 minute mark, or skip to 2.53 min for the big pay-off.
I'm not saying it's a rip-off. Just similar in feel.
I thought 'the mighty giants' ripped off They Might Be Giants?
BAM Festival!
pretty good considering recent attempts ... but the tigers still got the best song by a mile
It reminds Mr hhh of the teddybears picnic.
I like the slightly menacing soviet propoganda vibe.
Heard this on the radio this morning, I really liked it!
There's a new AFL team?
GWS are so far west they're from Russia
Hell yeah- that is what it reminds me of!
