After a week of “crazy tropical weather” and with a day of showers forecast, organisers of the St Jerome’s Laneway Festival are taking no chances.
When the event makes its Brisbane bow at Alexandria Street in Fortitude Valley tomorrow (January 28), it’ll be doing so undercover. While showers may end up bypassing the festival all together – they are predicted to move mostly along the Queensland coast – co-promoter Danny Rogers said they’re preparing for the worst.
“All stages and punter viewing areas of tomorrow's event will be hosted undercover ensuring that both the amazing bands and the punters that we want to have the best experience possible can enjoy these artists without the hindrance of wet weather,” Rogers said in a statement.
“The beauty of this site is that it is capable of being hosted undercover and we've always had a back up wet weather plan up our sleeve for this show.”
Rogers also took the opportunity to respond to the inevitable feedback about timetable clashes. Punters will have to choose between SBTRKT, M83 and Washed Out; The Drums, The Horrors and Chairlift; Yuck, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart and EMA; and Feist and Toro Y Moi. The good news, said Rogers, is that it is possible to walk between each stage in under three minutes.
“The main issue is that we have such a solid line-up of artists that it is inevitable that there would be a few time clashes,” Rogers said. For various reasons we will not go into here, this is a common and unfortunate aspect of having a phenomenal multistage line-up.”
Punters at Laneway Brisbane are being advised to wear sturdy footwear (no thongs), and despite the forecast, no umbrellas will be permitted into the event.

Public circumcision? amazing what passes for entertainment these days.
you have no idea how hard it is being so awesome, erryday
Having everything undercover actually probably makes more sense anyway in a Brisbane summer, crazy rain or not. I mainly stuck to shaded/undercover stages there the last couple of years anyway.
Lot of pissed off people after M83 at the end - they were meant to play 9 - 9.50, ended up doing 9.50 - 10.25. Sound problems, apparently. But zero communication to audience. Sound was yuck all day on all stages, pretty much.
Anyway with this and the Kanye BDO thing, can M + N interview festival organisers about why they don't get on the mic and speak to the crowd?
Apparently Feist was getting shocked by her mic?
Laneway and sound weren't friends today.
