Melbourne’s Community Cup – a charity Australian Rules football match between Triple R/PBS presenters and local musicians – is headed to Sydney.
The event, which has a 20-year history in Melbourne, will take place in Sydney for the first time on March 18 at Henson Park in Sydenham, home to rugby league team the Newtown Jets. Organisers are now calling for expressions of interests from players, as well as artists who want to perform on the day.
Adrian Panozzo, CEO of Reclink Australia – charity partner of the event since 2009 – said the Community Cup helped raised more than $120,000 for the disadvantaged last year. Taking place at Elsternwick Park, the event attracted more than 12,000 people, with performances by the likes of You Am I and Tumbleweed (full report here).
“The music industry in Melbourne have historically banded together to put on a great event in partnership with Reclink Australia,” he said. “For Sydney, we are looking to bring together the same team format to do battle on the paddock, have fun, and unite a mass crowd in a great cause.”
The Sydney Community Cup website will launch in early February. In the meantime, interested parties should [email](mailto: kim@rockstar.net.au) Kim Carter at Rockstar Management.

It's not April 1st today is it?
sydney is the new melbourne
If this goes ahead, like any other sporting event in Sydney, it will fail tremendously.
As good as this news is I can't see this working as well in Sydney, though I hope I'm wrong.
Good to see kim getting involved with this,
Such a bad idea. Surely the Melbourne one will still take place.
Will be devastated if it's an aussie rules match. If they want it to have a sydney identity, they should play the sport Henson Park is famous for.
and by that, i mean this sounds fun where do i sign up?
will its be afl or league?
sorta snap with ghoti max, though he gave reasons, afl on a square park at henson park?
Henson is an oval though...blashpemists play aussie rules there on sundays through the winter, i think it's the sydney a-grade comp or something? So they COULD do it...it's just a matter of whether they SHOULD. (They shouldn't)
While it's for a good cause, I'm not sure the concept has been that well thought out. Or maybe it has and cards are just being played close to chests. I suspect the former.
Who will take the place of the RRR team? Fbi? 2ser? Are more importantly, who will give a shit? Melbourne is a bit different to most cities in that the love of footy tends to cross cultural boundaries a bit more than it does in other states.
Does Sydney have the big music identities (Tim Rogers/Dan Kelly equivalents)who are passionate about football?
I see the success of the Melbourne event as being due to the promotion by RRR and the support of local music identities who are outspokenly passionate about their footy. Now I'm pretty new to Sydney, but it's not something I've noticed in this city.
And yes, it's gotta be a rugby league game. I don't imagine a game of aussie rules would be taken to kindly.
This is a genuine question by the way.
All the above said, if they get Russell Crowe on board they have themselves a moneymaker. That is, if you count him as being a musician.
sorry to be a pedant, but it's actually in marrickville.
Yeah, can we clarify whether it's AFL or rugby league? It's important.
It does seem really weird. The Community Cup is about as ''Melbourne'' an event as it gets.
I suppose the first paragraph is clear(ish) – it's AFL.
Aussie Rules, I should say.
Tim Rogers is from sydney and a league fan, Dave McCormack once wrote the best ever rugby league song of all time ('i like football, you like football, we all like rugby league') AndyKentof You am I i'm pretty sure is a tigers fan (could be wrong)..all of the Hoodoo Gurus and Screaming Jets would probably be keen, Jay of Frenzal is always at Henson for Jets games...so you've got members of fivve bands against a couple of fbi guys, and maybe some street press fucks or something? There's something to build on maybe..
Lindsay of frenzal always talks up his manly connections, so you could almost see a triple j involvement.
i wonder if there's any possibility of a melbs event and a sydney event? sounds like it would be a great event for the sydney scene but it will surely be sorely missed in melbs.
Aren't you forgetting Rugby Rugby Rugby League? Hmm?

Damn it.
if you bought a brick from the annandale you could use it to throw at someone at register your disgust.
Also there's a ''Rock for Reclink'' event at the HiFi in Sydney on the 15th March.
The Western Walers logo carries the image of a Waler horse. Bred in New South Wales and famous for endurance and speed, Walers were used widely by the light horsemen during WW1. This team will be dominated by musos and will also continue the tradition of the Aboriginal flag colours worn by Melbourne brother team, the Espy Rockdogs
The Sydney Sailors will wear the original sash design of the South Melbourne jumper from their first flag in 1918. This jumper commemorates the historical roots of the Sydney Swans. The Sydney Sailors is the brother team of Melbourne’s Triple R 102.7FM and PBS 106.7FM Megahertz, and is a team dominated by radio and media.
Alright, I'm gonna not be anti-aussie rules anymore and embrace this thing. Woo! How to learn the rules of this game in a month?
depends, are you playing or spectating?
Possibly both
i would assume they'd be already training.
otherwise, the trick is to get the ball towards your goals in any way possible, but you can't throw the ball.
pretty simple!
This will never oust PRL
The bouncing on the run thing confuses me too..how does that work?
its like travelling in basketball.
you can also bend down and tap the ball to the ground.
or just kick the thing.
Thanks man. Running around all confused in the outfield sounds like fun.
Celibate Rifles, The Meanies and Front End Loader (plus one more) announced as the bands on the day. Adam Spencer and Dan Sultan team captains. Looking like a good day!
Good band line up. Any chance of the Hell City Galmours members in the team?
Dunno? Ask Evo! It will be interesting to see who will be playing in these Sydney teams.
By the way, Hell City Glamours are doing a secret gig in Melbourne today (i.e. Saturday 25th Feb 2012). ㋡
Already had something on. Will try to see Celibate Rifles at the Caravan Music Club.
Bands tba, but the theme / tribute band is The Cramps!
Blue Ruin will be playing I think.
