Watch: Gotye Covered By 5 People On 1 Guitar

YouTube is awash with covers of Gotye’s duet with Kimbra ‘Somebody That I Used To Know’, but few are as dexterous and resourceful as Canadian outfit Walk Off The Earth’s.

Although some YouTube users have already cast doubt on the clip’s authenticity, the quintet (featuring a terminally bored Eric Cantona doppelganger) seemingly use one guitar to piece together the various musical layers of the original, which topped the ARIA charts last year and was listed among our Best Tracks of 2011.

The clip has amassed more than 3,000,000 hits since being posted on January 5, prompting a comment from Gotye himself via Twitter. “I know who to ask for help with acoustic versions of Somebody,” he said.

‘Somebody That I Used To Know’ is the odds-on favourite to take out the triple j “Hottest 100” for 2011, which will be revealed on January 26. In an interview with M+N last year, Gotye said he was dissatisfied with the finished product, but just had to let “[it] go”.

“There wasn’t anything pragmatic or realistic I could do anymore in terms of remixing, tweaking, re-recording vocals, trying another part, or spending more money and time,” he told M+N.

Are you saying they're not actually playing the one guitar? LUDICROUS to even consider that.

My favourite parts include how the guy sings like he's in an episode of Monkey, and the groups amazing melodies which somehow sound EXACTLY like they're autotuned.

This clip also made me want to flykick a Crystal Palace supporter in the face.

Maximum Sincere  said about 2 years ago:

replygirl looks sort of like filterfeed.

Can we get to the bottom of if this is a hoax or not?

livingincanada  said about 2 years ago:

my favourite part is where I refuse to watch either of these clips lest I throw my laptop out the window

TheBastard  said about 2 years ago:

There's heaps of post production in this. Are you guys deaf??

unvisible  said about 2 years ago:

Finally! I can't believe we had to endure 8 1/2 days of 2012 without some Gotye-related news.

Maximum Sincere  said about 2 years ago:

Yeah but really there's nothing wrong with giving it a bit of treatment. I think what we're talking about here is that it wasn't actually tracked in one take on the same instrument at the same time that the video was shot.

dazmurray  said about 2 years ago:

I prefer this cover by Elliot Smith.

But it's obvious that it's overdubbed. And they're not claiming it's not overdubbed. How is that fraudulent?

''Walk off the Earth and Sarah Blackwood perform a cover of Gotye's ''Somebody that I used to know'' using five people on one guitar.''

Maximum Sincere  said about 2 years ago:

My knickers aren't in a twist, but I would suggest that there are many many people who think this was recorded live. I think MOST people would think this was recorded live. Because it's kind of the whole point of the clip.

Doesn't say 'live', does it?

Ohhhh now you've got me thinking about him in an army uniform. Stop it sting-bono, you're turning me on!

Glancing at the YouTube comments, it seems I am not the only one who seeks the affection of bearded dude. HANDS OFF BITCHEZ.

definitely  said about 2 years ago:

So you can do another Gotye story tomorrow - check out this video of both videos at the same time

I reckon they used the original song as the backing track for doing their video, then overdubbed. Fits perfectly. That should get some more knickers twisted. I still love you bearded-dude-apparently-named-Taylor.
