ARIAs 2011: The Front End Loader Speech That Never Was
News posted Monday, November 28 2011 at 12:00 AM.
Related: Aria, Gotye, Boy & Bear, Kimbra, Front End Loader.
After 20 years and six albums, Front End Loader won their first ARIA Award last night; a fact you may’ve missed if you were watching the telecast on Nine’s digital channel GO!.
The band beat out the likes of Coerce, Cosmic Psychos, Dream on Dreamer and Floatingme in the decidedly unsexy Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album category for this year’s Ritardando. And while Gotye (six awards), Boy & Bear (five including Album of the Year) and Kimbra (Best Female Artist) will no doubt be making all the page six headlines, spare a thought for the 30-something rock-dads from Sydney who didn’t get to deliver an awkward acceptance speech. (Or have someone make one on their behalf, as the case may be.)
Convinced of a “highly improbable” win, the band sent triple j’s Lindsay “The Doctor” McDougall up on stage to collect their prize. Here’s the speech the Nine Network decided not to air. We're sure it had nothing to do with having to read their label, "Weeping Anus Records", out on the night.
If Radio’s The Doctor is reading this from stage, it means the unthinkable has happened and Floating Me has been robbed!!
The members of Front End Loader can think of no finer way to spend an evening than to be here with you all. Unfortunately, as an independent band that has been not making money and not selling albums for many years, our budget does not allow this.
To our fans who congratulated us on the nomination, we accept in the spirit that you’ve offered it. You have proven over the years to be a strange bunch of freaks, but you’re our freaks and we’ve grown fond of you. If this award makes you happy, go right ahead and enjoy that.
We’re not sure what the award means – we know there’s no cash prize, because that’s the first thing we asked. If there is any value attached to this award then it belongs to our partners and families, past and present, who have enabled, tolerated and endured the challenges and bullshit involved in being Australia’s least popular, relatively well known band.
To the Australian Music Industry … as you were … please carry on … we mean you no harm. We will continue to write Rock Music that we enjoy, play shows when and where we can, and record and release this music as our time, money, and circumstances permit. None of these activities concern you so please, move along, and let us never speak of this again.
So there you have it – just in case you were wondering.
Anyhow, as we were saying, we do have a show coming up, so let’s just focus on that, shall we?
Hopefullly we’ll see you there.

To paraphrase Everett True, fucken good on em
Heh heh. Cheeky, but accurate. No wonder it was cut from the broadcast. What was the audience reaction to the speech like?
It doesn't actually read that bad.. the ''industry'' and ch 9 are sooktards for pulling it from the broadcast
*sooktard-scaredycats
What were they wearing?
maybe they didn't want to say Weeping Anus Records out on air?
Wait, Loader released a record last year?
Maybe they didn't show it because they don't show all the awards anyway? Not everything's a conspiracy.
it was this year -- and bloody good.
deserving of a review on this here website?
indeed, but some things get sent out and never come back...
fucking fantastic record and the speech is pure loader
too bad it wasn't televised
bless them
''it was this year -- and bloody good.'' - MESS AND NOISE

haha. get ghoti-max on the case. hell, get him on the payroll, jose.
The Fauves might have a few words to say about that.
SELF-DEPRICATION FIGHT! GO!
So awesome!
it's not that amazing, just honest and cheeky. Good on them for being themselves and giving nary a toss.
loader! aria! rah!
surprised there's been no metal fans complaining.
and none of the 'fringe' categories made the telecast - jazz, kids, etc - did they?
kids didn't even with the wiggles winning (and getting the HoF induction) ?
weird as the cross promotion value would be high.
yay for loader. i didn't even know they were nominated.
Couldn't agree more with what the Loader wrote, getting that message to the 'music industry' in the room, pity it wasn't televised.
BUT
don't you have to nominate yourself to be in the ARIA awards? If they didn't want to be a part of it, why enter into the crock of shit in the first place?
no one has mentioned how hilarious the loader facebook posts have been?
this is my fav:
Front End Loader
For sale. One trophy, mint condition. Best offer.
Pick up from The Annandale Hotel, Friday December 2nd.
Shame. Its the best award acceptance speech since TISM (Les Murray)
The music industry is a septic boil on the buttocks of humanity...
Nup - the artisan awards are a week or so before the night and the others aren't televised. The actual award go for over 4 hours. I wouldn't think people would want to watch that much on they. At least when you are there, they feed you and fill you up with booze (except the AC/DC wine - that was shit)
peterpaulandmary, I can assure you that none of us have any idea how we were nominated. And nor do the Psychos. I can only assume that it was MGM, who distributed the album, as well as the Coerce one, I believe.
So, what was the audience reaction like? Considering it was mostly industry there, I imagine the silence must have been deafening.
what's the point in even giving these awards out?
tree falling in the woods...
I didn't think MGM were that hands on with the labels they distribute. They certainly aren't with Half A Cow! I've only ever put up for nomination a Kim Salmon album. Cost $300 and 25 cds or something like that.
it went down well actually. People laughed & applauded.
beside the simple recognition for good work, how about as an ad for the recipient, so the industry knows x is a good engineer, or y does nice artwork?
and indeed, the damn broadcast is long enough. and as the oscars and emmys and every other award show usually proves, the more obscure the category the longer the speech by the winner.
I have no idea how hands on MGM are or not. But if it costs $300+ to nominate yourself, then we sure as hell wouldn't have. Much like we didn't pay $495 each to attend the event.
Distros definitely give things a push when they think it's worthwhile. I don't know to what extent, but I know it was Creative Vibes that pulled the strings which resulted in Gotye getting nominated for six categories back in '07. Everyone was perplexed at the time because it was all for the release cycle of a remix album... but somehow it worked out...
Nominees should never have to pay to attend an awards show. It's one of the basics of putting on an awards show, up there with making sure everyone ends the night drunk.
I bet Delta didn't pay for her ticket
If anyone was going to charge nominees to attend their own awards ceremony, it would have to be someone from the music industry.
No, but I bet someone did.
This ain't the 80s - or even the 90s. You can no longer assume every nominee has a corporate backer ready to shell out for tickets.
X post
agreed - but surely nominees should get a free bloody ticket from ARIA
That's the AMP nomination process.
Also...
YAY for loaders!
Hi Dogbastard!
waves
i'd bet $50 kylie didn't pay for her ticket, and her table was vacant as soon as she won her awards lol
yay Australia, we MATTER lololol
Nearly half a grand each to sit through that shamozzle??!! That's ridiculous.
That actually disgusts me
This is true. It was quite obvious too because it was right at the front.
if it had been televised - would many of us have seen it? the only reason i know it's aria time is because of this thread :-)
yeh tenzenmen - youtube!
