Sydney’s Richard In Your Mind have released the first taste of new album SUN; a clip to first single ‘Vision’ inspired by ’90s skate movies and shot by all five members on handycams.
The idea was hatched by band member Spod, who directed last year’s ‘Candelabra’. He said the clip was inspired by the “forward momentum” of the song, however when it came time to filming it, the band’s members were scattered around the world.
“I figured the best way to make a clip was to construct a script based around the movement and momentum of the song, get each member to film to this script wherever they were at a given time as a slice of their lifebox and to make it revolve around the sun,” he told M+N.
“I love the look of ’90s skate movies – all 4:3 grainy, blown-out fisheye footage – and I also love the fact that everyone has a video camera in their pocket these days, so I put those two things together, sent the MP3 audio laced with my ridiculous directions to the boys and they got filming.
“Pat filmed his part in Sydney Uni; Richard in his backyard with his dog Ravi and some secret Waterfall Grotto friends; Jordy in a secret bushland; Conrad chose not to film his in Spain, Paris, London or LA, and waited till he was back in Circular Quay as he's a rebel who says no to rules; and I filmed mine in Times Square in New York, which got pretty stressful pretty quick.”
Described as their “most cohesive and beautiful album yet”, SUN will be released on September 9 through Rice Is Nice. It follows last year’s My Volcano, which came in at #7 in our annual Critics Poll.
The band will preview songs from the album at FBi Social in Sydney this Thursday (August 25), with an east-coast tour to follow in September. Dates here.

I like the synth figure near the end. The main chord thing is a bit annoying. Good clip, achieves its goals. Nice drum sound. Different approach on the vocals, too — nice. What did you think, Margaret?
And Rice Is Nice introduces Ben Shackleton to the fold! Welcome aboard, Shack!
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! It looks, sounds and feels how I felt that time!
Tomorrow night's RIYM gig should be killer... Hammocks & Honey and Oblako Lodka supporting. Excited to be putting it on.

New direction, I like it. Looking forward to the rest of the album.
