Watch: Kilbey’s Hall Of Fame Speech

“I haven’t got a speech,” said Steve Kilbey as he strode up to the mic at The Church’s induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in Sydney last night (October 27).
Fifteen minutes later, he’d roasted most of the guests including Richard Wilkins and his “schoolboy” quiff; feted the other inductees including Johnny Young and his unique way of handclapping; recited a verse from John Williamson’s ‘Old Man Emu’; and told several amusing anecdotes, one involving former Church manager Michael Chugg and a World War II plane full of gear, and another, a topless Taswegian who’s now a “grandmother”. The whole thing prompted host Julia Zemiro to declare: “Give that man his own show!”
Before it’s cut to bits when the ceremony is broadcast on SBS’ rock quiz/variety show RocKwiz on Saturday night, 9.20pm, here’s the speech in all its unscripted, unedited glory:

fucking best shit EVER
gotta get a 6 pack and watch it again!
remember GB3 Friday 29th at Northcote SC featuring Steve ''Aria'' Kilbey.
Hahahahaha....awesome!
Is that Tina Arena heckling? Marty Wilson-Piper still looks fucking cool even without the massive hoop earrings.
I love this man. Awesome, funny yet still somehow humble speech.
this is why people should get rid of pr. best acceptance speech ever? and marty wilson-piper sums it up.
This has lifted my mood considerably...
that is a great effort to hold attention for 15 mins - i get petrified at the idea of 30 seconds in front of a crowd
Brilliant speech. Would happily pay to hear 2 hours-worth of this.
Am-AZ-ing!!!
Am I the only one who is reminded of David Brent?
''...axing school teachers and strippers...''. bravo!
Amazing.
Pure genius. Talk about seizing the moment. I wanted to see him go on for another 15 minutes.
god i love kilbey
hmmm yes and no. it was good and shit. a bit stilted and whatnot, it was ok. I liked parts of it, other parts I rolled my eyes. you know more rock schtick from awards crap. why are they so happy being put in a museum anyway? kilbey and his crew were from that pathetic school of intellectual but not quite bands that really shit me when I was a kid, although sure I love those old hits.
Totally.
'Chuggie'.
I am in awe of this man all the more.
He's right though - the rest of the world totally missed out.
Priest = Aura - Genius
the whole chuggie thing was such a godaweful rimlick.
the thing is the loved ones..that was good. see thats the shit.
''genuine tasmanian tits''
''cheers''
glad to hear so much appreciation for this amazing man and this phenominal band
god bless the church
Geez, I thought of anyone on this board Matt Church would be most appreciative of/empathetic towards am aging musician rambling on for longer than expected.
dude. really.. ageing musician eh?..oh you poor bastard.
lol.
what a dude.
I was having a joke. Dude! Dude..
I really liked this, but award ceremonies are always just that little bit naff..
is cool. I am ageing. I like me better now then before. pretty privelidged. give me heaps. I don't mind getting shit. I just wanna make a 70s am radio classic that is cringe worthy.
also check out the great man's latest blog post re: being induced/inducted:

generally a great blog. Hope some of the more poetic and abstract entries get published one day with Steve's artwork. Ranaissance, man!
I'm so glad I watched that. What a speech!
conclusion: against accepted wisdom it appears having a couple of lines can make you the bit more funny and interesting that you think you are...
that woulda been the magic dust off of Richard Wilkins' hair montycliff.
haha
He likes a smoke!
Was he on drugs? He seemed a bit distractable and tangential.
brilliant.
i want him to speak at my funeral
What a wanker, the guy is coked out of his eyeballs or more likely dosed up on cheap trucker speed. I bet he is going to feel like a total cock watching that back sober.
I've seen god.
Oh come on doc, don't be like that. You are very probably right though. That's entertainment though, in the words of Tony Bennett.
settle down dudes. jeez, why stand around scratchig your chin & even bother analysing something so off the cuff & free?
i got Starfish on cassette back in the day and it partially changed my life
Lost still floors me every time
ah well
all hail King Kilbey!
I remember seeing The Church at Selinas circa 1990 and it was plain then that ''aloof'' really meant ''pissfunny'' - Kilbey responded to a heckler's request by deadpanning, ''I hear someone calling for Unguarded Moment ...'' [pause] ''... the definition of optimism...''
