The Drones’ Gareth Liddiard will take his debut solo album, Strange Tourist, out on the road in November.
The album was recorded in an isolated mansion 30 minutes outside Yass in country New South Wales. Armed with just a guitar and a bottle of whisky, Liddiard concocted “surreal stories” of tightrope walkers, down and outers, suicidal Japanese salarymen and suburban radicals. Harking back to the days before 15-minute phoners and e-chats, Liddiard and crew kindly allowed intrepid M+N reporter Andrew Ramadge in on the process. The results of which will be published in “novella form” soon.
Liddiard’s solo tour will kick off on November 5 at The Thornbury Theatre in Melbourne, taking in regional and city shows in Western Australia, Queensland, South Australia and NSW along the way. He’s also scheduled to perform at the Queenscliff Music Festival in Victoria on November 27. Full dates below.

How cool.
Onya Ramadge.
and the drones recorded in a tasmanian farmhouse. and the augie march singer recorded in a preston skating rink. how do they find these places? it's intriguing. do they have rich benefactors? romantic record labels? second jobs as realtors? is there an 'artistic places to record music' directory? if so what other locations would it include? didn't someone (registered nurse?) record in a melbourne disused sewer?
How about a recording studio?
i don't like his facial hair in this picture.
now thats underground. lol o'clock
The ''Skating Rink'' is actually just a warehouse the size of a skating rink. Also if I really wanted to I have access to a number of farms I could record at, I just don't have any songs or talent. With that said it's not that amazing or intruiging that you can find different places to record.
Fuck. Flying out of the country 3rd Nov.
I just recorded an album in a Aircraft Hanger at the airport, massive drum sound. Why not get out of the studio and amongst it
Recorded vocals in a sweat shop in Footscray - so urban. And then realised I was taking the piss...
this is a fucking great album, believe me. a game-changer.
i live just of liddiard st in hawthorn ...
chrisj how so and what game?
Just heard from your editor chrisj how good this record is. Can't wait to get my copy!
I've caught a little of his solo shows. Whilst I'm quite new to the one man band thing (folk and the like is slowly creeping into my musical tastes, not pushing it) I have seriously dug what I have heard so far.
The 5 songs I saw him do their other night were brilliant. Really looking forward to the album and tour.
Does he sing with that ridiculous affectation?
piss. not bloody coming here.
Go Gary Go!,
great in that the stories he tells are incredible in the truest sense of the world. he spins convincing, literate, complex pynchon-esque yarns about strange outsiders. game changing in that i'm not sure anyone has done this since don walker.
i think i've said enough it's not out til october.
Do y'know if there is a vinyl release?
dunno but it's made for vinyl. surely.
not funny.
:~(
black waspl - I pissed myself laughing.
Will buy tix when I get paid next week!
Me too Tugboat!
My friends are either a) can't afford it, b) don't like him or c) already have plan.
I might go by myself.
The 1st gig I go by myself since Fab D at The Tote.
Shit, the show is sold out???
Bought sat nite tix.
Will enjoy the word and music and sadness with a Little Creature's Pale Ale.
Anyone know who is supporting tonight?
Loene Carmen...
Bit excited about this. Me and my gal and one of my best mates who is visiting from the UK (and is a Drones fan). Will be quite a special evening.
anyone know the run times for this tonight?
Wow. Simply. WOW
