Festival Smackdown: Washington 11, Cloud Control 9

The competition to play the most festivals this spring/summer is heating up, with Megan Washington edging ahead of Cloud Control by clinching a spot on the Mullum Music Festival bill.

Washington was confirmed in the first round of acts for the festival, which will be held in Mullumbimby on the NSW north coast from November 25-28. She’s part of a largely roots-based bill that includes the likes of Kaki King (US), Harry James Angus, Mama Kin, Jen Cloher, Jordie Lane and Jackie Marshall.

In an apparent throw-down challenge to festival perennials like the Philly Jays, Art Vs Science and Little Red, the Melbourne-based singer and her band are now confirmed for 11 festivals over the next few months: Mullum, Peat’s Ridge, Parklife, Queenscliff, Sunset Sounds, Falls, Full Noise, Southbound, Verge, BigSound and Funk N Grooves. She’s already played Bluesfest, triple j’s One Night Stand and Splendour In The Grass.

Not to be outdone, Cloud Control have been confirmed for nine events: Verge, One Movement, Coaster, Stonefest, Meredith, Peats Ridge, Falls, Sunset Sounds and Southbound. Can they overtake Washington with only a few major announcements to come? Stay tuned to M+N to find out.

UPDATE:
- 12/10: Cloud Control confirmed for Laneway, taking their festival tally to 10.

using Antony Greens festival predictor, here's some options

Newtown festival: Cloud Control
BDO: Washington melb, Cloud Control syd.
Homebake: Was almost going to be both, but is now neither.
Laneway: Another potential tie, but could end up with Washington on preferences

Current prediction is Washington 13, Cloud Control 11.

huwzey  said about 1 year ago:

clearly a double washington/cloud control headline would have been enough to save homebake

It's not surprising. Both acts are flogged by Triple J, who actually book every festival in Australia except for ATP.

But Washington and Cloud Control are presumably not so expensive that they're out of reach for the smaller festivals (although Washington's guarantees will probably soon reach at least the $30K to $40K per show mark, considering her headline sales)

Cloud Control also played at the Melbourne Writers Festival - does that count?

so cloud control are playing jagermeister independant music awards, which is part of the melbourne music festival, so I reckon that counts as +1.

Just waiting for Oakenshott to finish talking to see which band he picks.

They do? Expand on this statement please.
