In Brief: The Mess Hall, Alpine, Jager Awards
  • Sydney’s The Mess Hall have announced a tri-state tour next month. The duo will perform at Sydney’s Annandale Hotel on September 11, Brisbane’s The Zoo on September 17 and Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club on September 24. The tour will feature material from across the band’s back catalogue, including Notes From A Ceiling, the AMP-winning Devils Elbow and last year’s For The Birds, which we described as “an engaging album that reinvigorates the tired two-piece format”. In other Mess Hall news, singer/guitarist Jed Kurzel has turned his hand to soundtrack work. He’s written music for Foxtel’s new show Spirited starring Claudia Karvan and is scoring an Australian feature film directed by his brother Justin, which is due out early next year.

  • Alpine have become the latest act to join Sydney’s esteemed Ivy League label. The Melbourne-based six-piece (formerly known as Swiss) now join such luminaries as Cloud Control, Cabins, the aforementioned Mess Hall, Josh Pyke and Sparkadia. The band are currently putting the finishing touches on their debut EP and will be playing the final night of their month-long residency at the Northcote Social Club next Tuesday (August 31). Tickets: $8 on the door.

  • The fifth annual Jagermeister Independent Music Awards (formerly known as the Jagermeister AIR Awards) will be held on October 1 at The Forum Theatre in Melbourne. And if it’s anything like last year, we’re sure looking forward to trays of Jager being “doled out by grid girls in skimpy outfits” (full report here). There’s apparently an awards component too, with gongs for Best Independent Dance/Electronic Release, Best Independent Artist, Best Independent Hip Hop/Urban Release and Best Independent Hard Rock/Punk Release. The ceremony will also feature performances by Cloud Control, British India and Sally Seltmann. Tickets: $29 (plus booking fees). Buy them here.
