YAI Sever Ties With EMI, Ready New LP

You Am I have set a release date for their new album.

Their most “sonically adventurous” to date, the as-yet-untitled album – their ninth – will be released on October 8. But this time they’ll be doing it without EMI, the label behind their past two records Convicts (2007) and Dilettantes (2008).

“Although we've had a strong, affectionate, intelligent relationship with EMI for our past two LPs, the making of this record has been such a unique, bewildering, exciting experience that the band has decided to formalise a release with a handpicked crew that we've spent more than a few early hours pontificating about what we love about being in this band, and creating music,” read a typically verbose statement from frontman Tim Rogers.

“After almost 20 years of making records, we found ourselves bursting at the seams with energy, and the people at our new team understand our need to dive in headfirst and get fruity.”

Said new team is Sydney indie Other Tongues, who will be releasing the album via MGM distribution. Described as a “riveting address to the nation”, it was recorded over “various sessions, studios, and combinations” with producer/engineer Greg Wales and later mixed by James Cadsky.

Tim Rogers is a pretentious rich kid who was funded by his parents to live in Fitzroy while he honed the dress sense of fitzroyalty 3 years out of date and made bland, smug pop music.

It's always funny how people can judge somebody for their financial status. I don't care if he's rich, poor or anything about his background. I enjoy his songs, and his (and the whole bands) live performances are amazingly honest, and if you don't get it then that's your bad luck.

ha ha, hillsong hoods yr obviously so street, keeping it real on yr macbook in a forum! irony is bullshit so put that in the back pocket of your cheap mondays.

as my man ice cube might say - fuck all y'all - you am i are one of the best bands australia have ever produced and their brand of sincere rock n roll makes the hipsters cringe.

dilettantes was all killer this should be amazing.

god bless the fucking lot of us.

hillsong was rehashing a joke from the washington review.

If this album is as half as good as convicts, then it will be great,

Now bring on the live shows!

timmydodgers  said about 1 year ago:

rehash, how ironic. see reference to cheap mondays.

i honestly don't think you all appreciate what an amazing band YAI is in Australia (commercially - see Powderfinger - and artistically) and if NZ had a band half as talented we probably wouldn't either....

ha, I just saw how much of a stink my half-arsed parody comment caused. but good luck to you am i, i bear them no grudge in case anyone didn't get my metahumour.

well i for one was unaware of this reference :) (cringes with embarrassment)

i still think the Metro (Sydney) shows when Hi Fi Way was released go down as some of the best ever moments I've witnessed at a live show. it was kind of a revelation (for me).

it was still t-shirt & sneakers era YAI too, and Tim's first appearance without the long Tumbleweed hair. if foggy-at-best memory serves me correctly

I hope these guys get re-energised with this new label/release etc

drtoupee  said about 1 year ago:

YAI haven't done anything that good since Davey Lane joined. I find it boring watching them prance around stage showing how rock they are. Tims voice is questionable........ good lyrics yes.

I don't think you appreciate how long some of us have been carrying the torch for those guys.

join the message board! you'd be more than welcome!

personally I've loved them since auckland BDO '94.... which makes me feel OLD.

(sorry for missing the meta humour before, my god you have to read every single post to stay up with this crowd, tough times!!!!!!!!!)
