Ratcat’s Simon Day In Bonds Ad

News posted Thursday, August 12 2010 at 12:00 PM.
Related: Ratcat.

Aside from supporting Hüsker Dü’s Grant Hart on his Australian tour earlier this year, Simon Day hasn't exactly been a ubiquitous figure since disbanding Ratcat all those years ago. So imagine our excitement when he turned up – clad in a striped T-shirt and leather jacket, of course – on a Bonds bra commercial.

Day makes a brief cameo in the clip, which stars an all-girl garage band covering Ratcat’s ‘Another Girl Another Planet’ ‘That Ain’t Bad’. Except that it isn’t really an all-girl garage band, but a studio group featuring Melbourne garage rock duo The Cheats and Karina Utomo from the now defunct Canberra outfit Young And Restless.

The ad has been rolled out across TV, cinema, Facebook and fashion websites. It follows a similar campaign that used a Super Wild Horses track to flog a line of Bonds women’s hipsters.

And here's the original

HennessyKate  said about 1 year ago:

ha! everytime i see Simon Day around he's wearing that stripy t-shirt. very much appeals to the 14-yr old Ratcat fan still in me!

Block  said about 1 year ago:

Is it true Bonds paid him for this by giving him free striped tshirts for life?

BurtBacharach  said about 1 year ago:

he looks well preserved for his age. I like the touch of having him in there.

Pity about the bras.

That's never occurred to me and I have listened to both songs over and over.

Anaemic cover.

Yep. Terrible, vocal-heavy mix.
And those models don't look very rock'n'roll, do they?

mickster  said about 1 year ago:

hmm, melbourne 2 piece bands feature in bonds ads: guitar + drums = bras + undies.

who'll be next?? digger and the pussycats with ally spazzy singing?!?!

kazpatafta  said about 1 year ago:

Horrible cover, horrible ad. Bring back Patty Rafter, Bonds.

And yeah, I don't hear much of Another Girl, Another Planet in the original song at all.

Block  said about 1 year ago:

Nah, I hear the Bonds folks are trying to sign Aktion Unit and She Hunter for the next instalment..

Yeah, and they don't fit my massive muscles in their t-shirts. Lift yr game Bonds!

Zaphod  said about 1 year ago:

Simon Day should be playing in the back of the truck in a bra and undies.

Once again Zaphod said what everyone else was thinking.

OAAD  said about 1 year ago:

Bon Scott is turning in his grave... that truck must feel very cheap and used by this musical abomination of a load...

i truly only watched this ad for the articles

svelteslacks  said about 1 year ago:

I didn't see it as necessarily pervy behaviour from the onlookers, more a case of ''OMGWTFBBQ!?'' than ''phwoar!''.

i think two ads are very different. the one above is about a minute long, the one on tv is only about the 30 second mark. the one above shows heaps more crowd based reactions of a OMGWTF nature than the one on tv. it also sets up the back of the truck scenario a bit more.

i reckon (although not trying to analyse the brain of a teen, cause that would be impossible) that the comments were based on the fact that this 15/16 year old had absolutely no idea who simon day is, and she had no idea that the song was a cover. she'd never heard it before. so to her, it was more just a 'ewww, why are there old men in the ad' type comment (cause anyone over the age of 19 is old).

i don't really see it as pervy, more just a bonds attempt to include the original singer etc... but funny to see how the mind of a teen works... who are more the bonds target audience than any of us.

my opinion, i hate all bonds ads. this one included.

I forgot to add ''in my best Wil Anderson voice''...followed by rapturous laughter from the studio audience

anok  said about 1 year ago:

why make a great song shit and annoying? stay truer to the orig = selling more undies, surely?

untold/animals  said about 1 year ago:

Does anyone want to buy my undies? As of 1pm today, they will be for sale. I will dance and sing on the back of a truck if I have to.

VGC, little use, I've simply outgrown them and wish to upgrade to a more professional model.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

Sveltes raises a good point. Why use a song by a band that most people under 30 have never heard of to market underwear to teenagers? Is it because their mums buy their undies for them, and still get all gooshy over Simon Day?
In that case, I would say that having him appear in the ad is not just a sly cameo, but the entire point.

svelteslacks  said about 1 year ago:

girls stop letting their mum choose their undies by about the age of 10 :)

scallywag  said about 1 year ago:

i wonder if having simon appear in the ad was part of the synch deal ?

trafficsounds  said about 1 year ago:

wow that was the worst. cover. ever.

and the bra band type marketing is not even new!

MissAustralia2003  said about 1 year ago:

why isn't the ratcat song available in itunes?

bigdaddykane  said about 1 year ago:

Blame Bonds.

peterpaulandmary  said about 1 year ago:

Very good question. Try looking for any Ratcat or Hummingbirds or Sidewinder. Fuck those major labels too fucked to spend 15 minutes putting up local back catalogue.

Not only do the writers miss out on royalties (the bands are probably still unrecouped) but new and old fans are missing out on some good music.

FIFTEEN MINUTES!

I was pondering that point last year:
