Splendour Passes Woodfordia Test

Despite minor injuries, teething problems and heavy traffic (a reported 10-kilometre line greeted punters at the entrance), organisers have declared this year’s Spendour In The Grass the "best yet".

After a decade in Byron Bay, the festival made its debut at Woodfordia – home of the Woodford Folk Festival – in Queensland’s Sunshine Coast hinterland this past weekend (July 30-August 1). All up, a record crowd of 32,000 people watched performances by The Strokes, The Pixies, LCD Soundsystem and local acts Empire of the Sun, Cloud Control, Tame Impala and Wolfmother.

The Splendour tradition of on-stage collaborations continued throughout the weekend: Ben Harper was backed by INXS drummer Jon Farris for a rendition of ‘Never Tear Us Apart’; Mumford and Sons gatecrashed The Temper Trap’s set; while Boy and Bear, Julia Stone and Passion Pit returned the favour, joining Mumford and Sons for a “hoedown” on Sunday.

Despite the large numbers, the festival received a clean bill of health from Emergency First Aid Services, which only reported of “minor complaints”.

Organisers Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco thanked the local community for their support. “We’re thrilled with our first Splendour at Woodfordia. We’ve had a really great time this year and despite some teething problems and heavy traffic that was expected, we’re pleased to say that feedback on the event has been fantastic. We were blessed with great sunshine filled weather, a great vibe and spectacular performances making it one cracking weekend.”

Full report and photos to come.

I hear the Black Keys, Leo Sayer and Mumford and Sons live next door. can anyone confirm?

anonymous  said about 1 year ago:

don't lump poor Leo Sayer in with that lot! He actually lives here and is now an Australian citizen, and doesn't play shows every 3 months. (i await the m+n review soon enough)

that being said, i think the pixies might have moved into the place gomez used to live in.

Interesting that there was no mention of a lot of people being locked out of getting into the main amphitheatre for Florence+The Machine and The Stokes. If I'd paid $500 and was missing out on some of the major acts (that presumably people had paid to see) I'd be less than pleased. Or about the alleged stand-off between the police saying they needed to stop people going in due to safety concerns and the onsite security who said it was fine. Or about the rumours that there were maybe 39,000 there.

Interesting, given that the Woodford Folk Fest has had 130,000 punters some years. (Well, supposedly.)

(Sorry, aggregate, not all at once. Poo.)

Yes it was locked for a bit, but had you gone back 15-20mins later you would have found you could have walked straight through. I thought the festival was pretty well run.
