Sia, Cloud Control and Tame Impala have been nominated for triple j’s Australian Album of the Year award. The trio are among the first acts vying for the station’s J Awards, with more artists set to be announced over the coming months.
Adelaide-born Sia Furler was nominated for third album We Are Born, which we described as “her most overtly positive record to date”. She’s up against Blue Mountains-raised four-piece Cloud Control and their debut Bliss Release (read our “On Rotation” review here) and Perth psychedelic outfit Tame Impala and their “frustratingly reductive” first album Innerspeaker.
Awarded annually, the J Awards recoginse local artists in three categories: Australian Album of the Year, Australian Music Video of the Year and Unearthed Artist of the Year. Nominees for all three awards are chosen by judges from triple j, including the music and program director, as well as presenters.
Winners will be announced in the first week of December, after the culmination of the station’s “Aus Music Month”. Previous winners have included Wolfmother (2005), Hilltop Hoods (2006), The Panics (2007), The Presets (2008) and Sarah Blasko (2009).
