Forthcoming: Seagull

Related: Seagull.

What: Council Tree by Seagull.
When: July 23 through Two Bright Lakes/Remote Control.
Key notes: Second album for Chris Bolton, a Melbourne-based classically trained guitarist who formed Seagull as a solo project in 2006. Follow-up to debut LP Goodbye Weather (2008). Recorded with the help of producer Nick Huggins and featuring Kid Sam’s Kishore Ryan on percussion, Edward Bolton on bass and “instrumental subtleties” from Michael Zullicki. From the presser: “Bolton transfigures his songs through lyrical repetition, sparse yet complex arrangements and spacious electronic sounds giving Council Tree an otherworldly quality.”
First impressions: More dark, beguiling stuff from Bolton in the vein of Grand Salvo’s Soil Creatures or Over the Stones, Under the Stars by Ned Collette. The delicate interplay on ‘Water’ and ‘Hum Hum’ are highlights, while ‘Grand Mother’ exudes a jammy, Crazy Horse vibe.
