Forthcoming: The Boat People

News posted Tuesday, June 22 2010 at 03:00 PM.
Related: The Boat People.

What: Dear Darkly by The Boat People.

When: July 2 independently via Shock.

Key notes: Third album for Brisbane-born indie-pop quartet. The follow-up to 2008’s Chandeliers, which we described as a “genuinely great Australian pop album”. While Chandeliers was three years in the making, Dear Darkly, was recorded over several sessions with producer John Castle (Washington, The Bamboos, Dan Parsons) in his studio in Melbourne, where half the band now reside. It features singles 'Echo Stick Guitars', 'Soporific' and 'Under The Ocean'

First impressions: The Boat People’s pop credentials have never been in doubt, but on Dear Darkly they’ve balanced out the quirk (‘Echo Stick Guitars’, ‘I’m Too Much In My Mind’) with a moodier, more introspective sound reminiscent of Youth Group’s 2004 opus Skeleton Jar. As it stands, it’s their best and most ambitious collection to date, and in ‘Antidote’ they might’ve penned the best indie-pop song of the year.

Under The Ocean
Soporific
Echo Stick Guitars
Antidote
Live In The Dark
Too Much In My Mind
Damn Defensive
