The Tote To ‘Officially’ Re-Open

While it “technically” re-opened with an industry launch last week, and has “effectively” been open since, Melbourne’s iconic Tote Hotel will “officially” begin its new era with a trio of bands tonight (June 17).
Laying claim to the “first bands to play the re-opened Tote” title – although they’ll have to duke it out with Eagle and The Worm and Digger & The Pussycats first – are The Bakelite Age, Geelong’s Frowning Clouds and Ouch My Face. They’ll be playing in the newly revamped bandroom, which features a Nexo PA and better sightlines thanks to the removal of two columns.
The Collingwood institution has laid dormant since a hike in licensing fees and “high risk” security conditions lead to its closure in late January. However, the pub’s licence was recently acquired by publicans Jon Perring, Andrew Portokallis and Sam Crupi, who also reached an agreement last week for the right to use The Tote’s name.
Bands performing over the coming weeks include Kim Salmon’s new outfit Precious Jules (June 18), The Spazzys (June 19), Warped (June 24), Black Cab (June 25), Mike Noga and The Gentlemen of Fortune (June 26), the newly reformed Johnnys (July 3), Crow (July 9) and a Thursday night residency by Melbourne’s Love Connection in July.
