Now we know how much you love us "reporting on" Pitchfork reviews of local bands, but it’s Friday and the news cycle is winding down for the week. Still, it’d be remiss of us not to mention that both Tame Impala and Naked on the Vague (pictured) have received glowing reviews by the notorious US tastemaker today (May 28).
In his review of Tame Impala’s debut album Innerspeaker, Pitchfork’s Zach Kelly described the album as “a cleanly executed and frequently dazzling debut … a psychedelia-heavy outing that toys with paisley pop, stoner vibes, and an expansive array of swirling guitars”. He anointed the album with an 8.5 rating and its coveted “Best New Music” tag, which translates to "ka-ching!" in Modular speak. For once, however, it’d be nice to read a review of an Australian act that doesn’t mention The Vines, Wolfmother or Jet, but hey, we’re still a kangaroo-infested backwater that seeks constant validation from overseas, so who are we to complain?
As for NOTV, the Sydney quartet (not duo as the review stated) received a respectable 7.3 for new album Heap Of Nothing, with Larry Fitzmaurice (a pseudonym, surely?) describing it as having a “whole shitload of personality”.
Also, Canberra’s / / / ▲ ▲ ▲ \ \ \ (aka Void aka Tim Dwyer), has been referenced in a Pitchfork feature about an emerging genre of experimental music called "drag" (ie. "ghostly, slow-moving electro-pop” for those who can’t be bothered reading). Thanks to Polaroids of Androids for the tip off.

Tim/Void// / / ▲ ▲ ▲ \ \ \ also aka Horse MacGyver is playing on June 6 at The Phoenix in Canberra with Chrome Dome and the awesome Jonny Telafone.
It will be the best thing to happen in Canberra since the Batrider/Pets with Pets/Teddy Trouble gig last Sunday.
Great success for Australia.
When will M+N become the tastemakers?
When they add scores to their reviews.
muh
isn't it called witch house?
I think Tame Impala have great songs. Their talent got the right fleeting mix of current trend and influence that their less obvious percusses fondled over or just miss understood.
If that means much in the long run is a different question.
so glad pitchfork has finally approved of the tame impala record so i can go public with my hesitant appreciation of it.
Porkfork.
there's heaps worse bands in australia than tame impala, good luck to 'em.
a biased american website which only ever reviews australian bands on american labels should mean fuck all to australians. you can think for yourselves, writers, readers, etc. please do. show some self respect please m&n.
Modular is an Australian label, and I don't understand the second sentence.
i guess he's saying that australians shouldn't place importance in pfolk's acknowledgement of aus artists?
I guess you're saying Pitchfork is a pile of shit and you don't give two figs for their culturally biased opinions and token coverage of Australian acts, Alps. I'd have to agree with that.
i would like more m+n coverage of canberra bands. i say m+n is culturally biased.
i could say the same for adelaide, but then i realise i'm not putting my hand up to write for them
Maybe you should. I'd love to hear more of what's going on in other cities. Love the Brisbane reviews on M+N.
i'm a terrible writer frankie, don't think i could
so let me get this straight. everyone would rather that an influential international website would ignore australian acts rather than say nice things and encourage a huge new and untapped audience to investigate and possibly buy their albums?
if so, to use a cliche, you guys are fucked in the head.
agreed, i dont think their coverage is token at all... seems about the right amount to me...
I heard Naked On The Vague scored the Tame Impala tour support on the strength of this review.
