In Brief: Wolf & Cub, Midnight Juggernauts, Big Sound
  • Adelaide’s Wolf & Cub “can’t remember” the last time they played in their hometown, but they’ll rectify that with a show at The Edinburgh Castle (that’s “Ed Castle” to the locals) tomorrow night (May 28). But early birds beware: with bands not starting until 10pm, Wolf & Cub aren’t likely to take the stage until after midnight. Supports by “good friends” Like Leaves and Jimmy & The Mirrors.

  • Melbourne’s Midnight Juggernauts have announced supports for their upcoming national tour in support of new album, The Crystal Axis. Dappled Cities, Canyons and Kirin J Callinan (ex-Mercy Arms) will join them as they launch the record in Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane in August. More details here. The Crystal Axis is out tomorrow (May 27) on Siberia Records through Inertia.

  • Applications to perform at Big Sound Live, the musical component of September’s Big Sound industry conference in Brisbane, will close next week. Taking over the Fortitude Valley from September 8-10, the event will see more than 50 acts play over two nights. Past performers have included the Temper Trap, The Middle East, Cloud Control, The Boat People and Philadelphia Grand Jury. Submissions close on Monday (May 31), to apply click here. Meanwhile, more speakers have been announced for the conference including Morgan Lebus from Domino Recordings, Tom Windish from US booking agency The Windish Agency and New York booker Johnny Beach (The Bowery Ballroom, Mercury Lounge). They will join US music writer Michael Azzerad, keynote speaker John O’Donnell and Dave Faulkner from the “iconic” Hoodoo Gurus.

Do Wolf and Cub have a new bass player?Saw them play recently, Must be a different guy...

And seriously, those speakers at Big Sound Live... no offence to them, but do we really need to hear a shpiel from some venue booker in NYC? What are they gonna say that anyone doesn't really know? You book headline acts that people wanna see. Pretty simple really.

It's weird. People go to these music 'conferences' and hear 'industry professionals' say the most obvious, common sense things. I guess it's a tax junket for the speakers.
