Lou Reed Hearts Local Noise

For noise acts, getting the tick of approval from Lou Reed is like getting a peck on the cheek from God. It was Reed himself who popularised noise with 1975’s Metal Machine Music, a 64-minute double album of “ear-wrecking electronic sludge” (Rolling Stone’s words, not ours).

Back in town for Vivid Live at the Sydney Opera House – a festival of music, theatre and visual art, which he’s curated with wife Laurie Anderson – Reed has handpicked four local acts for a noise showcase on May 31.

Oren Ambarchi (pictured), The Night Terrors, Zond and Rice Corpse will join internationals Boris, Bardo Pond, and Melt Banana, for Noise Night, an “epic two-hour-plus onslaught of noise and sonic experimentation” at the Opera House’s Opera Theatre.

For Rice Corpse’s Lucas Abela being selected by Reed himself is an exciting opportunity. “I believe Lou had heard the track ‘Mountain’ from the Mrs Rice Chinese-version album and chose us based on that,” he told M+N. “I am excited about it in general, my parents are coming to see me play for the very first time.”

Tickets for Noise Night are now available from $35. For more information click here.

Poor Mr and Mrs Abela. I think they better have an extra paramedic on hand just in case.

No serious noise musician i personally know (and I know-fuck loads of serious noise musicians from around the world) would feel this way.

To serious noise musicians, Lou Reed's noise stuff is a joke.

Noise didn't start with Metal Machine Music, it started with Luigi Russolo's Intonarumori over 60 years earlier.

I want a sign that says FUTURIST so I can just hold it in the air in large crowds for no apparent reason.

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

I'd prefer one that states RAYONIST, but each to their own.

I can think of hundreds of local acts that I'd rather see than another noise dude.

It is a wonderful pic Francois.

Noise dudes don't tend to bore me as much as another cumpot with a guitar, several chords, tunings and a few time signatures.

Toss out the DL-4 and the Macbook, learn a couple of power chords and write a real song losers!

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

Hahaha, I couldn't agree more. Though I've personally never used a computer or delay pedal in anything and tend to be put off by those who do.

Does anyone remember Lou Reed doing the Invisible Jukebox in WIRE? They played him some Oren, he blanked, but said something like ''Oh this is great, hey secretary, write this name down for me.''

Great that ZOND are playing.

karencarpenter  said about 1 year ago:

PS: does Cage ever give Russolo more than a one line prop? Seems to be some pretty major parallels going on there ...

I never paid attention to Lou Reed hey, but I always associated it with ''essentials'' like Horses by Patti Smith and ignored it.
