Forthcoming: Richard In Your Mind

News posted Tuesday, May 11 2010 at 01:00 PM.
Related: Richard In Your Mind.

What: My Volcano by Richard In Your Mind.

When: June 26 through Rice Is Nice (SPOD, Seekae, Seja).

Key notes: Second full-length release for the ever-expanding Sydney psychedelic outfit formed by housemates Richard Cartwright and Conrad Richters in 2006. The follow-up to 2007’s The Future Prehistoric. Produced by SPOD, who had previously worked with the band on last year’s Summertime EP. Dabbles in “lush psychedelia, Odelay-esque party jams, lo-fi antifolk and tribal freak-outs”.

First impressions: Last year’s Summertime EP – which explored a cut-and-paste pastiche that was so in vogue in the late ’90s – was thankfully just a ruse. Richard In Your Mind have returned to their psychedelic bubblegum roots, and frankly it suits them best. SPOD’s oddball touches are all over this record, especially on the white-boy rap of ‘Candelabra’, but he also knows just when to stand aside and let the band do their thing, like on the gorgeously lo-fi ‘I Will’ and ‘Edge Off Dreaming’, which sounds like an outtake from The Flaming Lips’ oft-forgotten *In A Priest Driven Ambulance’.

Tiny Collosus Face
Candelabra
Losing Our Minds
Birds
I Will
Lightning Eyes
This Face
