Forthcoming: The Paradise Motel

What: Australian Ghost Story by The Paradise Motel.

When: June 11 independently.

Key notes: The Paradise Motel’s first record in over a decade following 1999’s acclaimed Flight Paths. Recorded “in a barn beneath giant Eucalyptus” on the banks of the Yarra in Warburton, Melbourne, in May 2009. Mixed by guitarists Charles Bickford and Matthew Aulich at the band’s Melbourne studio. Mastered by Casey Rice (Tortoise, Aleks & The Ramps).

First impressions: Despite the addition of a new rhythm section, and the passage of a decade between drinks, it's clearly business as usual for the Paradise Motel. All of which means more of the spindly, skeletal guitar lines that made their name, anchored by gritty bass and drums and interwoven with Merida Sussex's spectacularly spectral vocals. AGS feels like the natural evolution of their work, despite the 10-year time lag. It's a welcome return.
