After five long years at the helm, Melbourne’s controversial Liquor Licensing director Sue Maclellan is expected to vacate her office today (May 7). According to reports in the The Herald Sun, Maclellan’s contract has not been renewed, and the government is now looking for a successor.
Appointed in 2005, Maclellan oversaw the 2am lockout, which lasted three months and was considered by many to be a monumental flop. While always claiming to be a mere agent instituting government policy, Maclellan’s combative approach has been blamed for the closure of The Tote hotel (read more about that here), as well as a raft of licensing issues that culminated in the 20,000-strong SLAM rally in February.
In an interview with M+N in January, publican Jon Perring from Fair Go 4 Live Music famously quipped that Maclellan had the power, under section 58 of the Liquor Control Reform Act, to solve Victoria’s licensing mess with “the stroke of a pen”.
Former Tote licensee Bruce Milne declined to comment on Maclellan’s departure.
UPDATE: Mark Brennan, former small business commissioner, has been named as Maclellan's successor.

or tonight . it's not over until 5pm, or 4.51pm public servant hours
It's Mac Time Now!
I wouldn't celebrate unless she is actually replaced with someone who will approach the job differently. The chances of that are pretty slim. On top of that, the laws they'll be enforcing will be exactly the same.
Who cares! This is a victory! The governmenthas given us assurances it won't happen again!

''Mr Robinson said the Government would ask Mr Brennan to make the continued implementation of the new licence fees and the Live Music Accord key priorities.''
''“We also expect the new Director to continue implementing the Live Music Accord to ensure the ongoing viability of Victoria’s music venues and culture.”
Good news for venue operators, I hope, given his track record of supporting and understanding small business. Here's his chance to undo some of the wrongs of his predecessor.
First and most important step: de-link live music and 'high-risk'. DO IT!
What mean spirited people you all are. I was only doing my job.
By that I think you mean not to real Government Sector Management standards. It is a shame that you all took this personally.
they have to fight for their right to party! its a cultural thing.

Anyway. I've left my legacy - the streets are safer now thanks to me and I've also left a really damp fart on my old office chair.
Enjoy, Mr Brennan. You'll be wearing tiny fecal particles on day one.
hi Sue, since you are no longer employed and probably need the cash, I'll give you $20 for a blowjob. $25 if you gargle.
