Tote Memorabilia Up For Grabs

Melbourne’s Tote Hotel is set to reopen under new management next month. But, as M+N writer René Schaefer discovered at a press conference announcing its resurrection last week, the venue is a shell of its former self.
Most of the furnishings and fittings that made the venue what it was were removed by former proprietors Bruce and James Milne in an effort to recoup the significant losses arising from its closure in mid-January. And for the first time since then, those items will be on show to the public for one final viewing.
For four days only (April 23-26), 374 Gallery in Northcote will be exhibiting all of The Tote’s memorabilia – from the jukebox to signed photos and posters of the bands that performed on its hallowed stage. Even the venue’s notorious sticky carpet will be given an airing, so to speak, with limited edition and numbered pieces on display.
All items will be available to the public for sale from April 24. For opening times and more information click here.

Funny to think of old carpet as a 'limited edition'. Haha. Should be interesting, anyhow.
not interstate/international friendly.
fail.
Oh no they may be having an auction in Scandinavia as well later in the month, just in case anyone there cares.
volcano damaged carpet must go!
Bags the door stamp!
I know the signed mclusky poster was absent from the bar for at least a year before it's closure but I'm really hoping it somehow pops up.
I know the Milne's have bills to pay but I feel it is somewhat weird that they are selling off history they largely didn't create in the time they owned the pub
I do somewhat agree with that statement but in light of how much money Bruce spent fighting for the place, the fact that he had to sell off his massive record collection and that the closing really did mark the end of the ''classic Tote'' era to me completely validates the auction.
Agreed.
If they happen to be selling the other half of the toilet door, I'd like to complete my collection.
You feel it's weird they are selling off assets of a business they bought?
I'd have thought that was pretty normal.
would it not have been worth more to sell many of these memorabilia pieces to the new leaseholders? And then the Tote could have continued? It's changed owners before.
I would understand not doing this if the tote had had the same owners from day one i wouldn't want some other prick getting it wrong, but since they bought the business too....
Or maybe they are banking on some seriously wealthy collectors.
If they hadn't have lost money trying to save the joint and had just decided to sell the business to new owners then profit from selling off the memorabilia, I'd consider that to be poor taste.
But of course that isn't what happened. Really hope Bruce is going OK in paying off all the debt. Hopefully Perring will help him out a bit if he lets them have the Tote name.
I'd be pretty sure the memorabilia is worth a lot more to fans at auction that it would be as an asset to the business. Grubby old carpet holds no commercial value to the business.
will the jukebox have it's collection included?
I wonder what that's worth?
i'm happy the place will be starting afresh with new things on the walls, to create its own new history. fuck nostalgia.
Yeah, I don't wanna have to look at that pic of you about the fire place anymore either.
you're think you're sick of it!
Well i agree the carpet is worth nought to new owners but surely the more they sell off the less value the business to new owners too?
Rigid in tights. That was a good gig

shortles as well
I'm gonna buy kuroneko AND the doorperson table & chair.
I want the set.
I'm high maintenance, though.
I'm pretty sure the TOTE had Beta58s at the end anywayz.
Much better high end clarity.
Got paid last night luckily. Will see what's still there when I go on Sunday.
Mclusky signed block mount was still available when I was there around one. Wanted badly, at $250 it was too far out of my price range though. Got a couple of framed pictures from the Cobra Room at $30 a piece. Friend got two fantastic brass cobra candle holders for $50. These are amazing.
A friend gave me a hundred dollars just just to buy memorabilia at this.
The Sailors poster made out of an old painting of a sailing ship with the gig details drawn over it was still for sale when I was there yesterday.
Two of my friends just called past to say hi. They'd grabbed me the Zeni Geva block mount!!!!!!!
Best friends ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
is the dirty lovers poster still there??
I'm trying to justify to my missus why this should belong in our house !
it sold
aaarrrghghhh !
bastards
nah good on whoever now owns it
Thankyou to everyone who bought something.
Please know, all of the money raised will go to creditors.
It felt weird but it's kinda cool to know that there are bits of the Tote all around the place now.
Don't sue if contract some new infectious disease from anything!
So many thanks to Mish (and her gallery) plus Mary, Mick, Amanda, Lauren, Amy, Foxxy and everyone else who made it all happen.
I can't believe people were happy to buy beer/smoke/chewing gum (and things I don't want to mention) stained posters, tables, bar mats and carpet.
I can't believe people wanted the most ratty, torn bar stools!
I look forward to being back at the corner of Wellington and Johnston St again, soon.
As a punter and music fan rather than a stressed out grouch!
I'll have to change my M&N name now.
… to Bruce Scrote?
back to gingerninja like old times?

Lifting the rug on Tote's secrets
JUST what was in that famous Tote sticky carpet? EG was so curious that we sent a piece of its famed upholstery — after it was posthumously carved up — to a lab for testing.
We can confirm the stories of vomit and blood may have been artistic licence. But as expected, the carpet contained/was held together by booze, smoke, sweat and BO, according to ACS Laboratories senior consultant Andrew Higgins, who sent us his results this week. After expressing relief that a glove was provided with the sample, Higgins reported: ‘‘Ethanol was found to be present but as the bag the sample was received in was open, we can assume the original higher levels have dissipated. Acetaldehyde, acetone, butanal and pentanal was found, which are known constituents of passive smoking. The banning of smoking from the venue may have reduced these over time.
‘‘Acetic acid, propanoic acid and butyric acid were found, which are constituents of sweat and BO. These are the same chemicals which give Werribee its rich and fruity odour. This would have, along with the chemicals above, given the venue its ‘individual fragrance’. Benzeneethanol is a disinfectant, which was probably used during cleaning. The other chemicals are part of the glues and backing of the carpet ... No illegal narcotics or drugs were found to be present; this indicates patrons were very careful not to waste any.’’
Hopefully the letters of support now stuck to the outside of the Tote building are covered in plastic/laminated so they stay there also.
nah, they're slowly fading, torn and disappearing
