Forthcoming: Sally Seltmann

News posted Tuesday, March 30 2010 at 04:00 PM.
Related: New Buffalo, Sally Seltmann.

What: Heart That’s Pounding by Sally Seltmann.

When: April 9 through Shock.

Key notes: First eponymous record for Seltmann, who recorded two albums – The Last Beautiful Day (2004) and Somewhere, Anywhere (2007) – as New Buffalo. Recorded in Melbourne at Sing Sing, Adelphia and at co-producer Francois Tetaz's recording space, as well as her home studio: a basement apartment that she’s re-imagined as a teen girl’s bedroom for “pop inspiration”. Guest artists include Cameron Bird and Gus Franklin (Architecture In Helsinki), Jens Lekman, husband Darren Seltmann (The Avalanches), Ned Collette, The Middle East, Mark Monnone from The Lucksmiths and Jessica Says.

First impressions: Ditching the New Buffalo moniker, Seltmann sounds like she’s truly found herself on Heart That’s Pounding, an uplifting record with rich multi-part harmonies and nods to classic pop. Lyrically, the album is Seltmann’s most direct yet; a collection of affirmations and confessionals dealing with change and everyday life. “Rock’n’roll, I never aimed to own the stage,” she reveals on the string-drenched ‘Book Song’. “I'd rather write a book with characters whose lives unfold.” ‘On The Borderline’ and ‘Set Me Free’ seem destined for radio.

i do really like the first new buffalo album but wasn't really so crash hot on the second one...

lekkas  said about 1 year ago:

still don't think you can beat her first EP About Last Night though... '16 beats' is a gem

esquared  said about 1 year ago:

I liked her second record the most. Harmony to my Heartbeat was good, but not amazing. This article has me excited again.

bignothing  said about 1 year ago:

I just heard 'On The Borderline' on RRR this morning - wonderful track. This is what JJJ kids should be listening to instead of goddamn Lily Allen.

lessmore  said about 1 year ago:

She reminds me of Prairie Dawn from Sesame Street. Not necessarily a bad thing.

MrsGideon  said about 1 year ago:

Aw, that's adorable, lessmore!

Just heard something on the radio about Sally playing a show for triple R on April 13 - can't seem to find any details online though. Has anyone heard about this?

This album sounds fantastic - on my second spin now.

esquared  said about 1 year ago:

11am at Hum? really?

MrsGideon  said about 1 year ago:

I wonder if this'll be available on vinyl?
That cover would look fabulous record-sized.

Crossing my fingers.

percolator  said about 1 year ago:

this is a really great sounding record. her vocals are way more confident. i guess it's just more polished overall. can't imagine why this wouldnt be hugely popular. is she getting any radio play aside from community radio and triple j?

CaptainHowdy  said about 1 year ago:

this is gold. i hope there are some more shows announced soon.
