Forthcoming: Spartak

Related: Spartak.

What: Verona by Spartak.
When: March 22 through UK label Low Point.
Key notes: Verona is the second album by Canberra’s Spartak, the duo of Shoeb Ahmad (guitar, electronics) and Evan Dorrian (drums, percussion). It follows on from debut Tales From The Colony Room released by hellosQuare in 2008. The album was recorded and improvised on the NSW South Coast over two days in late January 2009. It features guest vocals by Snowman’s Joe McKee and Colombian chanteuse Lucrecia Perez.
First impressions: For a band once synonymous with “washed-out ambience” (their words), Verona may well be Spartak’s most accessible to date. Recorded over two days at a “rapid pace”, the band clearly abandoned themselves to the moment, exploring sounds on the fly and playing with looser, almost free jazz-like structures. ‘Second Half Clouded’ is a highlight, with Lucrecia Perez’s textural vocals perfectly complementing the spooky organs and clattering percussion.

Is Evan in the UK for good? I miss seeing him drum.
he's a british passport holder so i think he's gonna try to get settled there and come back to australia on off for family things and playing shows. his other outfit pollen trio (jazz-improv) are gonna be recording in july at chem19 in glasgow, the same studio where mogwai, twilight sad and franz ferdinand made their most recent records so he might come back next to tour that record :-)
