St Helens Confirm Split

Melbourne’s St Helens are no more. The band have reportedly folded after frontman and chief songwriter Jarrod Quarrell decided to devote his energies to new solo project Lost Animal. The news was confirmed in a statement posted on Facebook a few days ago.

“I think it's time I make a statement regarding St Helens. I have left the band to focus solely on Lost Animal,” Quarrell said. “It's been on my mind for a long time now and I've decided that rather than squeezing out another St Helens album it's best to just get LA rolling now. I'd like to thank everyone who supported St Helens over ... the last few years and especially those who bought our album.”

While playing their first show in early 2007, it wasn’t until April last year that St Helens released their debut album Heavy Profession. Out through Dot Dash, it went on to place ninth in M+N’s annual Critics Poll and also garnered the band the title of Best New-ish Act (with a particular emphasis on the “ish”) in our Readers Poll. The band played their final show at the Big Day Out in Melbourne in late January.

Good band. Inglorious way to go out. They should do a proper show.

controversial. but funny.

tvforcats  said about 1 year ago:

They always seem to be referred to as a ''junkie band'', was that part of the problem?

timewaster  said about 1 year ago:

It's a pity. The band was starting to get build a following, now they break up. It takes a few albums for rough rock bands to really get an audience.

Maybe the romance ended. Who knows. It's sad.

does he ''know'' how to spell ''now'' or what?

black wasp!  said about 1 year ago:

He's just showing off the fact that he nows the 'k' is silent!

unvisible  said about 1 year ago:

Fear not, their music will live on the the hearts of children everywhere. Well, replace ''everywhere'' with ''Fitzroy'', and ''children'' with ''brown polyester-clad indie coolsies''.

Can't wait to tear up about the Memories™ in twenty years!

puretokyo  said about 1 year ago:

good lost animal set last night but unconvinced by addition of bassist

scraps  said about 1 year ago:

I thought the bassist was the best bit (at the Rob Roy weeks ago; I didn't catch em at the Old Bar). For the record, I'm told the announcement with (k/now) bad spelling was only online for 10mins, which makes it quite a scoop. Unfortunately it detracts from the wording of the statement, don't you think?

untold/animals  said about 1 year ago:

Abso-fricking-lutely, scraps.

ps. now that you're spending less time making these peeps look good, can you please do more Min Chips shows?

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

Seconded!

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

...about Minimum Chips, I mean.

scraps  said about 1 year ago:

(thanks, but) MinChips is on the shelf: Nicole's having another baby real soon. I drum for Mick Turner lately, if you're wondering. Plus Justin Fuller and I have an occasional duo (being the sum of our solo projects) called Drunk Dial. Oh and Aint Helens is about to go off, soon as we decide who's singing.
