Oh Mercy Win Again

The bank accounts of Melbourne’s Oh Mercy have just swelled by $15,000 courtesy of The Australian Music Prize (AMP).

Following their $10,000 Qantas Spirit of Youth Award triumph, the band have been announced as recipients of the Red Bull Award In Recognition of Outstanding Potential for their debut album, Privileged Woes. Announced one week prior to the $30,000 AMP, the award is bestowed upon an act from The Amp shortlist that is considered to “have a big bright future in music, both here and overseas”. Past winners have included bluejuice, Gotye and Jack Ladder.

Oh Mercy will now use the money to help fund their second album, which is currently in the writing stages. “Our debut album was very much our first attempt writing and recording our music and I am very much looking forward to writing and producing a stronger second album,” co-songwriter Alexander Gow said.

Oh Mercy will be performing live at The AMP winners event in Sydney on March 12. Other performers include former AMP nominee Perry Keyes and Melbourne singer-songwriter Washington, the inaugural winner of the Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition. Minister of the Arts Peter Garrett is guest speaker.

Yeah... because it must be tough for bluejuice and Gotye selling out shows across the country.

So I'm not sure how it's actually the kiss of death because both acts have become bigger after winning.

good record.

if only it had been a kiss of death for bluejuice, the world would be a better place.

Bluejuice should be banned under the Convention Against Torture.

walking around on broken leg... etc etc
oh mercy to me was a pretty good pop album, the perfect antidote to getting all heavy with heirs, useless children, ghosts of TV, the drones, dirty three and my other regular music consumption. i would have gone blasko because the production is just perfect, but then again i'm not a sexist pig!!!!???

C'mon Oh Mercy are big girls. That's what I like about them.

Touche!

PS: Come on Kiwis, 5 runs, 7 balls...

Cooperative Music  said about 1 year ago:

i would have gone blasko

this was just the award for new artists, not the big one, so Blasko wouldn't have been in consideration

You've lost an argument before it's barely begun when you dust that old chestnut off.

FIGHT!

Also, for $15k they could purchase Mike Love.
