Musos And Govt To Meet, Maclellan Stays In

Members of Melbourne’s music community will meet with Victorian Premier John Brumby and key government officials today (February 10) to discuss the state of Victoria’s live music scene.
The meeting was called in response to the outcry against the government’s liquor licensing regime following the closure of The Tote in late January. But despite the presence of some senior state politicians including Minister for Consumer Affairs Tony Robinson, Parliamentary Secretary for The Arts Rob Hudson and Member for Richmond Richard Wynne, there will reportedly be one notable absentee: Director of Liquor Licensing Sue Maclellan.
Despite reports in The Sunday Age that Maclellan would attend the meeting (scheduled for 2pm at Treasury Place), M+N has learned that she is not expected among today’s guests. “It’s telling,” said producer and former Blue Ruin singer Quincy McLean, one of the attendees. “Your guess is as good as ours, but it implies something.”
McLean, who is organising the upcoming Save Live Australia's Music (SLAM) rally through Melbourne’s CBD, said today’s meeting provided an opportunity for the music community to raise concerns with the government. The long list of attendees also includes musicians Wally Meanie, Dave Graney and Clare Bowditch, promoters Michael Gudinski and Richard Moffat and representatives from Fair Go 4 Live and SLAM.
“Everybody in that meeting is there because they know that something’s wrong if venues are closing down,” said McLean. “Our aim is to try and work out what the government can do to solve those problems.”
Regardless of the meeting’s outcome, McLean said he still expected the SLAM rally to take place on February 23. “I’m quite sure that there will be nothing confirmed from this meeting, so the rally will go ahead,” he said. “We’re just talking right now [to the government], to try and get an idea about what they think and whether they can offer us some sort of solution. At the end of the day, Liquor Licensing have broken the situation, and we’ve got to get them to fix it.”
Coinciding with the 34th anniversary of AC/DC’s famous ‘It’s A Long Way To The Top’ film clip shoot down Swanston Street, the rally will begin at 4pm outside the State Library and make its way to Parliament House on Bourke Street.
“The government can be heroes of this rally and it could be a celebration of this beautiful community that we have here. Or they can be the villains if they don’t stem the flow of venues going under or not being able to put on live music,” he said.

Hey, that
doesn't work. I can't get any music.
we can be heroes, just for one day.
limited characters, HEB.
Shoulda used and ampersand instead of ''and''. And, that ''and'' and ''to'' should be lowercase? Or do news headlines have a different style of capitalisation? I dropped out of my journalism course in first year.
house style for news headlines is all caps.
and we don't use ampersands in headlines. ever.
Should've just started a thread.
Sorry, ''starttted'' a thread.
7 why not jose?
Cool, I learned something new today.
isn't house like 90s? I thought it's all about trance now?
It avoids embarrassing typos.

toadphoney - some say she was turned down by meyer for vixen, and she's been a virago ever since
so what time will ACDC be playing?
they're on a 3-day break from the 23rd, so if what better way to get media attention than having them reenact playing 'It's a Long Way to the Top'' down Swanston St. Won't happen of course, or will it (?!), but would be cool to see these mega rock stars help out the town that gave them their big break.
bobmob, in answer i shall quote the log lady of twin peaks:
''am i being too secretive? no. one can never answer questions at the wrong moment. life, like music, has a rhythm. this particular song will end with three sharp notes, like .... drumbeats''
did you see it on abctv1 news?
Just on ABC News- Brumby nodding while Graney lectured him, and Wally took notes.
New taskforce being set up to try and resolve the problem, apparently.
what happened to the last taskforce?
Sorry to be flippant on an important issue, but I do love Wally.
and we know this because......................
Got taskfucked.
new taskforce. ahahaha... Graney must be KING tonight. spouting up the mountain writing a new record, pressing his shirts.
this is hilarious. I mean it's fucking funny when you think about it.
So they need to create a new taskforce because the person who was appointed to control the situation can't do her job properly?
Your taxes at work.
Video?
so what was the outcome?
news update shortly with minutes from Dave Graney.
stay tuned!
I thought Wally was taking the minutes?
Who took notes on the brainstorm session before Quincy cleaned the whiteboard?
