Ghosts Of TV On ‘Organic End’

Ahead of their final show, Sydney’s Ghosts of Television have spoken about their decision to call it quits.
After five years and a handful of releases, including a 2008 EP and last year’s debut album Forsaken Empire, the band have called time on their post punk-ish endeavor following the imminent relocation of drummer Adrian Clarke to Berlin. But speaking to M+N this week, singer Nic de Jong said their demise was inevitable.
“Everyone's focus and priorities have gradually shifted away from Ghosts. It's an organic end,” he said.
De Jong said he had a sense Forsaken Empire would be their last. Released in late December on Magnetic Recording Council, it was recently accorded “On Rotation” status by M+N and has garnered much acclaim in Sydney’s underground.
“Only a handful of people are ever going to hear it and the ones that have so far seem to like it,” he said. “Then again, we've played around for so long that anyone who isn't into it by this point knows that they aren't going to like a Ghosts record, and so it's not like someone is going to take a gamble on it and be disappointed.”
De Jong also poured cold water over the chance of a future reunion.
“I personally have no interest in ever rehashing an abandoned namesake,” he said. “Even if through some bizarre circumstance all five of us began playing together again, it would never be called Ghosts of Television.”
The band will play their final show at Doldrums (formerly Yvonne Ruve) in Hibernian House on February 19 update: show has been moved to February 18 at The Oxford Art Factory's Gallery Bar with supports from “close friends” Silver Moon, Dominic Talarico and Roberta Stewart. The final bunch of LPs will be for sale at the show.
