Bats Back For ANZAC Tour

After last year’s triumphant sold-out tour, New Zealand’s The Bats will return to Australia for a trio of dates in April.

The band will perform consecutive shows over the ANZAC long weekend: at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory with Richard In Your Mind on April 23; at Brisbane’s Troubadour with Greg Brady and The Anchors on April 24; and at Melbourne’s East Brunswick Club with Ross McLennan & The New World Sympathique and Milk Teddy on April 25.

Pioneers of the Dunedin/Flying Nun sound, The Bats have never broken up since forming in 1983, and still tour with the original lineup of Robert Scott, Paul Kean, Kaye Woodward and Malcolm Grant. Their most recent album, The Guilty Office, was released locally through Mistletone last year. Review here.

The Chills in May?

astralwerkor  said about 2 years ago:

Dead C in September, please.

spitchen  said about 1 year ago:

Awesome!! Saw them loads of times back in the day. Missed the Hoey show, so shall be there at Oxford Arts.

Loved The Chills too.

The Verlaines were the most underrated of all the Flying Nun bands imo. ''Bird Dog'' is one of my most favourite albums, with ''Slow Sad Love Song'' being one of the greatest break-up songs ever.

:)

Bats tickets on sale now!

LeRayonVert  said about 1 year ago:

Not the EBC one, their site says they'll be available Friday. That completely spoiled my attempt at an insterstate gig ticket impulse buy. I might change my mind by Friday!

Don’t You Rise limited edition 7'' singles will be available at the shows. Mistletone is also doing a digital release for this excellent EP which was released by Slumberland in the US.

Don’t You Rise gathers up four fine Bats tunes from 1998 and 2003, helping to complete the discographical picture leading up to The Guilty Office. Featuring the electric violin on Alastair Galbraith (who last featured on The Bats’ Law of Things), That’s How You Found Me would fit in perfectly on any classic Bats album, and mesmerises with its folk-pop groove. You Don’t Belong is a moody gem, while Don’t You Rise’s country-inflected strum is a live favourite. Face Inside The Sun rounds out the record in fine form, a mid-tempo sing-along that sounds straight off Daddy’s Highway. A pretty special EP then!

I think my presence alone reminds people to punch me generally :]

No probs, hope it went down a treat.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

At the risk of perpetuating a pointless argument, I'd just like to say that The Bats and Go Betweens actually have very little in common. Sure, both employ jangly, chiming guitars, but their songwriting styles (music and lyrics) are lightyears apart. It's like comparing Motorhead and Poison, just because they both vaguely fit into the genre of Heavy Metal.

kazpatafta  said about 1 year ago:

They're not worlds apart but I can see why people don't necessarily enjoy one if they love the other. But for me they're both amazing!

SpringRain  said about 1 year ago:

Same instrumentation, jangly guitars, melodic bass lines, melancholy and humour/joy, similar use of chords and melodies, added string instrumentation etc etc... maybe the lyrics are a bit different usually, but my point was that with the Bats singing 'Right Here', it's not like you would go 'Hang on... what's this all about?' if you didn't know it was a Go-Betweens song. You would just assume it was a Bats song that was slightly better than most Bats songs ;) But yes, this is pointless discussion.

I'm currently listening to the Guilty Office, and I like it better than most of their early material. Good on them

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

Grant McLennan's heart attack was possibly one of the happiest days in musical history for me. Though seeing the Bats twice now is certainly rating above that on the scale.

I'm absolutely taken in by the new material, and the new new ones were just perfect. I rarely feel the need to sway from side to side, but last night I might as well of had an ironic t-shirt and a cardigan. Bummed I forgot to grab the 7'' though :[

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

Does anyone know if last night sold out capacity wise?

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

Way to upset the Go Betweens fans, Mr. Poppin. At this rate there will be tears in cardigan town before the day is out...

...anyway, I'm pretty sure the mixer last night recorded The Bats' set. I'd love to hear that.

Haha, but now Forster is running around playing an acoustic guitar and getting whole crowds to sing along to Surfing Magazines. Surely you'd hate that more. Personally, I think it's hilarious and awesome.

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

Pfffff, I'm sure most of them awaken each morn in tears. I can't even bring myself to find sympathy for them.

A recording you say, now that would be most welcome!

I'm sure it would shit me to know end, the difference being that I don't have to ever hear it. Unlike the seemingly endless amount of rampant suckpuppets who play G-B's at every given moment in public spaces.

know = no... I blame the hangover.. or perhaps I've become stupider via this conversation.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

I had fun DJing at this gig. For anyone who wants to hear some more NZ music, I'll be playing a whole bunch of tunes at the Old Bar this Thursday night (11.30 till stumps). There was so much I didn't manage to fit in.

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

From memory I am doing Friday night, that's going to be a lot of NZ action on those decks over two days. I'll probably have to miss your set though as I need to be at the airport at 1:30am Friday morn.

national_highway_31  said about 1 year ago:

Brilliant set last night at The East. Right Here was a funny choice as it's probably one of the worst GB's songs around. How good was it when they did the encore and the first chords of North by Northwest (or Jazz Odessy or whetever they want to call it) came on!

potential Forster album title? :P

Hellzapoppin  said about 1 year ago:

Or potential new Fosters market.

LeRayonVert  said about 1 year ago:

Thanks for the NZ tunes Frankie, that was great. I'd love to hear more at the Old Bar but I'm back in Adelaide. I might be inspired to do my own NZ set over here some time.

FrankieTeardrop  said about 1 year ago:

Do it, LeRayon! Did we meet?

LeRayonVert  said about 1 year ago:

No we didn't meet, but yes, I'll definitely be playing a bit of NZ music. I've got a DJ set this weekend, but have already committed to an all vinyl set, don't have too much NZ stuff on Vinyl (Straitjacket Fits, JPSE, Chills, Dead C ... not much else), but will do a big NZ set some other time. I think I did do one once before after being inspired by a trip to NZ (including seeing the Bats in Christchurch).
