Forthcoming: The Ruby Suns

News posted Tuesday, February 2 2010 at 12:00 PM.
Related: The Ruby Suns.

What: The Ruby Suns’ Fight Softly.

When: March 5 through Sub Pop/Stomp.

Key notes: Third LP (second for Sub Pop) for Ryan McPhun, the prime mover of New Zealand’s The Ruby Suns. Veers from the path set by its predecessor, 2008’s acclaimed Sea Lion: “Thematically, it’s not as wide-eyed or light-hearted, picking apart the relationships faced as we pass through the world – with our surroundings, each other and ourselves.”

First impressions: McPhun’s trademark cross-continental rhythms and carefree vocals appear as if they’ve been fed into a giant gleaming computer and spit out the other side. That’s not a bad thing; the beats and textures have newfound electronic origins but are appealingly elastic. The album feels looser and more cosmic on the whole, emphasising open space and reverb, although there’s the same subtle yet persistent pull to move your limbs. ‘Haunted House’ looks likely to be the breakout single.

Tracklisting:

Sun Lake Rinsed
Mingus and Pike
Cinco
Cranberry
Closet Astrologer
Haunted House
How Kids Fail
Dusty Fruit
Two Humans
Olympics on Pot

really can't wait to hear this. does someone know where it'll first be available locally? particularly on vinyl? you can pre-order the LP from insound, but screw those guys and their 2 month wait on shipping.

Can't wait for this. Anyone digging on the Lawrence Arabia album? Former Ruby Suns dude on Mistletone - pop heaven!

untold/animals  said about 2 years ago:

Lawrence Arabia is poo boring but Ruby Suns? I've been waiting for this for ages!

Both Lawrence Arabia albums are fantastic, but especially Chant Darling....

Ruby Suns shits all over everything.

Sea Lion is pop (near-)perfection.

astrousersasmind  said about 2 years ago:

The selections they played at Camp were VERY promising. The downloadable edit of Cranberry is rad too, Dusty Fruit is already on a split 7-inch though in a different version (I think) and that rolls along beautifully.

Yes yes yes yes yes.

This is a totally different beast to Sea Lion.

Gonna take a few listens.

blake3030  said about 2 years ago:

Sounds a bit like Junior Boys in some places.

anok  said about 2 years ago:

shades of arthur russell on this opener.

anonymous  said about 2 years ago:

its progression rather then reinvention, how kids fall/dusty fruit sound like sea lion still, and everything still sounds like ruby suns, just new and improved.

blake3030  said about 2 years ago:

Dunno about improved, just different... and maybe equally as good. We'll see. Hard to improve on something as good as Sea Lion.

anonymous  said about 2 years ago:

the ''improved'' part was just a bit sloganistic. Its good though.

anok  said about 2 years ago:

this is gorgeous.

anok  said about 2 years ago:

closet astrologer, two humans and olympics on pot are the clear stand-outs for me. and yeah, i reckon it's really different. obviously there are some similar flavours from sea lion (dusted fruit is the obvious track in that sea lion vein), but it's a much less immediate record, with much more detail and nuance. less hooky. the arthur russell thing is strong throughout! really different vocal approach. i think it'll be a real grower.

untold/animals  said about 2 years ago:

I don't really like how it's so reverby and dreamy compared to what I think are killer, tightly defined live sets. Same complaint with the last album really.

anok  said about 2 years ago:

yeah good point. i wonder how this new stuff will work live. it seems like maybe the sampler heavy set-up mightn't work as well? someone said he's got two helpers on stage now maybe amee isn't one of them? anyway, hope they come back soon, even though they never really pack out venues here.

jeebee  said about 1 year ago:

The first half of cranberry reminds me a little of the 'taking pills' bit in Take Pills. I can imagine tracks from this album live a lot more than the way that the sea lion album tracks compare to the live versions.. know what I mean? I mean, this sounds infinitely more like a conga dance party than the last album, which Ryan still managed to turn into a conga dance party when it was live. Ooh, I love Closet Astrologer (shades even of Toto's 'africa' in the verse part!)! This album is making me very happy!

untold/animals  said about 1 year ago:

Amee, or however you spell it, is such a great part of the Ruby Suns live thing. Hope she's a part of it though I guess it's possible she isn't, what with her shop in Auckland and stuff.

I can't stop listening to 'cinco'
