Signings In Brief: Catcall, Seja Vogel
  • Three years after leaving polarising Sydney trio Kiosk and going solo, Catcall (aka 23-year old dance-pop phenom Catherine Kelleher) has announced her signing with Ivy League. She will release her debut album on the fashionable Sydney imprint, also home to The Mess Hall, Cloud Control and Red Riders, later this year. Since releasing her debut Anniversary EP in 2008 on her own label, Catcall has embraced a more “lushy dance pop” sound in contrast to the EP’s “hip-hopy vibe”. It was followed by a new live show, featuring drums, keys and dancers, which was unveiled during her dates with Phoenix last year.

  • The Rice Is Nice signing frenzy continues, with Seja Vogel joining the likes of Miniature Submarines, Talons, Seekae, Traps and Richard In Your Mind at the fledgling Sydney label. A founding member of Sekiden and keyboardist for Regurgitator, Vogel began working on her debut solo album, We Have Secrets But Nobody Cares, late last year. Produced by her brother Mirko (ex-Sekiden) and featuring guest appearances by labelmate SPOD, Regurgitator’s Quan Yeomans and Cameron Bruce, it’ll be out on March 27. First single ‘Sing Me The Song Like You Said’ is streaming here.

That's great news about Seja Vogel - can't wait to hear her record. Am I the only one to think the Rice Is Nice roster is pretty varied/inconsistent (depending how you look at it)? Not that that's a bad thing at all.

Ivy League is 'fashionable?' Huh?

Frankly, this is a weird choice for Catcall. She makes dancey electro with spiky girly vocals. She plays at dance festivals, she's got a DJ onstage. She's on the same stylistic page as MIA and Peaches.

Yet she's on a label that specializes in 60s-style rock and nu-blues. Weird choice. Are they gonna put her on tour with The Vines or Josh Pyke?
