Only in Sydney, could a “bunch of beautiful people with Ksubi and art-school connections playing nouveau post-punk” top an album of the year poll. But that’s exactly what Lost Valentinos did when they beat out the likes of Sarah Blasko, Decoder Ring, Seekae and Dappled Cities at the Sydney Music, Art and Culture (SMAC) Awards at Helm Bar last night (December 8).
The band took home their first SMAC – the coveted Record of the Year award – for their belated debut album Cities of Gold, which was released through etcetc in September. In the other music categories, Seekae won Best Live Music Act, while Best Music Event went to All Tomorrow’s Parties, which was curated by ex-Melburnian Nick Cave. There were also awards for Marrickville’s Red Rattler (Best Collective), highly touted quintet Sherlock’s Daughter (Next Big Thing) and Fergus Brown, who was awarded Best Sydney Song for ‘John, She Was Never Only Dancing’. Full list of winners below.
Held last year for the first time, the publically voted SMACs aim to celebrate “the best Sydney has to offer” in the fields of music, art and culture.

just ridicurous.
very impressed that he was recognised.
Album of the Year? Them? That's just being silly.
you have to consider the nominees may help with context.
all other nominees are better than lost valentinos tho.
all categories (except SMAC of the year) were publically voted. In some cases, like the album category, I think this came down to whoever has the biggest mailing list.
lol coveted

thanks for the link, but the site died half way through downloading. pretty keen to hear what they're like live. i assume good.
MPCs/etc + keyboards + laptop + drums + guitar + melodica + occasionally ivan vizintin.. fairly similar to the album but with some fairly funky variations, and all done pretty much live.
