In Brief: The Church, ARIAs, Daniel Lynch
  • With tickets to tonight’s show at Melbourne’s Corner Hotel sold out, an intimate stripped-back performance at The Workers Club this Sunday (December 6) will be the last chance for Melbourne audiences to see The Church this year. The band are currently winding their way through the country in support of a four-track EP and a swag of reissues including the internet-only Back With Two Beasts album. They will be joined by Alexander Gow and Thomas Savage of Oh Mercy in a special duo set, as well as Touch Typist and The Spoils (also in duo form). The show is part of the “Sundae Workers Series”, an event incorporating a vintage market, visuals and live music. Doors 4pm. More information here.

  • The ARIA Awards could be shifting from its Acer Arena home base to Melbourne, according to chairman Ed St John. Speaking to “Sticky Carpet” in The Age, St John said the push to move the ceremony to Melbourne appears to be gaining momentum. “At some point in the future it may well happen,” he said. “There's the small problem that a lot of the industry is based in Sydney so there's a cost attached to that … but it's only a plane fare.” The Age also reported that The ARIAs could be moving to pay TV next year after Channel Nine’s telecast attracted a paltry 700,000 viewers, down 400,000 from last year on Channel Ten. Time to bring Hasselhoff back?

  • A memorial service will be held next week for Sydney musician Daniel Lynch. Lynch, who passed away last Saturday morning, was a member of now defunct punk outfit Brand Disloyalty, along with Paul Mernagh and Chris Short and Shogun, who currently play in Royal Headache. Since forming in 2004, the band released a tape, a split CD-R with Sydney outfit Bene Gesserit and a 7”. The service will be held on December 7, 1.30pm, at the Macquarie Park Cemetery and Crematorium in North Ryde, Sydney. “Anybody who would like to show their love and support and to celebrate Daniel's short life is welcome to attend,” Mernagh told M+N.

I'm sure the PPCA will be happy to stump up artists' money to cover that. After all, they sponsored several categories this year after something of a sponsorship shortfall.

the gig last night was awesome. i missed their side shows last year but i've seen them a few times over the past 8 years. the first was a crap dinner and show thing at the corner, then spiegeltent - better than corner but again the sitting down thing. the other one at the corner was good, but this was better. except for some of the 40something crowd cunce.
