Final J Award Nominees Announced

The final nominees have been announced for this year’s j awards – and there’s no place for Temper Trap, Dappled Cities, Leader Cheetah or the experimental crabcore act you started in your basement earlier this year (although it’s probably listed in our Readers Poll, which we’re shamelessly plugging here).

Nominations for the “coveted” Australian Album of the Year include: Oh Mercy for Privileged Woes, Paul Dempsey for Everything Is True, Lisa Mitchell for Wonder, Philadelphia Grand Jury for Hope is for Hopers, Phrase for Clockworks, Kid Sam for Kid Sam, Sarah Blasko for As Day Follows Night, Bertie Blackman for Secrets and Lies, Hilltop Hoods for State of The Art and Karnivool for Sound Awake.

In the other categories, Philadelphia Grand Jury, The Middle East, Seth Sentry (who?) and Washington will duke it out for the Unearthed Award, while Art Vs Science, The Scare, Karnivool, Astronomy Class, bluejuice and Firekites will go vie for Music Video of the Year.

The winners will be selected by a judging panel that consists of triple j music and triple j tv staff. The winner will be announced on triple j on December 4.

When I was filling in the M+N poll I had the exact opposite thought.

Spooky.

Uuuum, there is no Wolfmother, Grinspoon or Powderfinger on that list and they all put out an album this year. I think that it a HUGE success for Australian music.

it's been a great year for australian music.

slug guts
useless children
uv race

fuck the mainstream (jjj).

timewaster  said about 2 months ago:

Who decides these nominations anyway?

Is any part of it voted by JJJ listeners? Or is it purely a decision of the JJJ head honcho?

team ham sandwich  said about 2 months ago:

The latter, timewaster.

hate the mainstream yeah! hey, hold up... oh mercy is pretty good, hmmm, sarah blasko is pretty good too and well produced! shit. lisa mitchell is catchy, and hilltop hoods is a freaking great hip hop album. damn. if this is mainstream....

you can't expect m+n stalwarts to get into triple j - but predictably you can expect them to hate on anything associated with triple j. instead you should appreciate these acts for what they are - great acts providing music that many people enjoy. is it the uv race? who cares, there's a time and a place for everything...

hence voting in the m+n readers poll. go on, feel superior and go vote whilst you snigger at powderfinger...

hmm...no Jet either. And no one really hates Lisa Mitchell do they? Hats off to Oh Mercy too.
