In Brief: No Anchor, Eddy Current, The Vines

Brisbane’s No Anchor (pictured) have followed in the footsteps of Girls Against Boys and, er, Pre.Shrunk by adding a second bass player to their ranks. Donovan Miller (Butcher Birds, Die On Planes) now joins the drum and bass duo of Alex Gillies and Ian Rogers. He’ll play his first gig with the band on November 27 at Brisbane’s The Front Bar (Step Inn) with The Rational Academy, Yout Dem and Whyte Lightning in support. Entry is $8. In other No Anchor news, the band recently contributed an unreleased track to a forthcoming compilation put together by new US label FSS. They’re also currently working on their third album, the follow-up to 2009’s Steam … In one of the better pairings of the year, Eddy Current Suppression Ring will hit the road with US labelmates Thee Oh Sees in December. The bands will perform at The Annandale in Sydney on December 3 with Royal Headache, The Cambridge in Newcastle on December 4 with Crabsmasher and at Billboards in Melbourne on December 18 with Witch Hats and The Twerps. Both bands are also confirmed for the Meredith Music Festival in rural Victoria on December 13 … It’s been almost a year since Craig Nicholls’ mental health issues forced the cancellation of a series of gigs in late ’08, but The Vines are back. The band eased their way into the live circuit with a “secret” show supporting You Am I at The Annandale Hotel on Saturday (November 14). Performing as “The Crimes”, the four-piece played a song from their forthcoming new album, as well as favourites such as ‘Ride’ and ‘Get Free’. You can read a brief review of the show here.
