Dirty Three, Laughing Clowns At Sydney Fest

The Dirty Three will take care of some unfinished business when they perform Ocean Songs in its entirety at Sydney Festival next year.

The band’s reprisal of their 1998 opus was cut short at All Tomorrow’s Parties at Mt Buller in January – and while it didn’t stop us from describing their performance as “swooningly special”, they’ll be playing it again at the Enmore Theatre on January 26. Joining them for this unique “Don’t Look Back” double header will be the Ed Kuepper-fronted Laughing Clowns who will perform a History of Rock ‘n’ Roll Vol. 1.

Other local events of note include a performance by experimental pioneers Severed Heads at a Beck’s Festival Bar event at the Hyde Park Barracks Museum on January 14. The performance is part of “Circa 1979: Signal to Noise”, a series of events celebrating Sydney’s experimental scene in the late 1970s. Support by The Reels and DJ Mark Murphy.

Sydney Festival runs from January 9-30. For a full line-up click here.

Too right! Go, Rasputin/Costa/Warren Ellis.

I'm surprised no-one's pointed out the success of the operation to separate the conjoined Cave-Ellis twins yet.

steveholt  said about 2 years ago:

Doesn't Mr Cave usually play piano with them at the ''Ocean Songs'' shows?

mealzebub  said about 2 years ago:

conjoined Cave-Ellis twins

Quite the bromance, innit.

No Laughing Clowns in Adelaide! That has to be the biggest disappointment since ... well, since Ed's upcoming show at the Gov got cancelled. At least if the Melbourne show was a Saturday I could go over for it, but a Thursday's a bit difficult.

__v  said about 2 years ago:

That's a shame LRV - although I suppose it's possible the Clowns might play more shows that aren't part of the Dirty Three tour.

Might give Melbourne a shot myself. Shame there's no Canberra show, that'd make life easier for the rabid fan.

LeRayonVert  said about 2 years ago:

In the street press today they had an article about Ed's show being cancelled and said ''he'll return to our shores in January with the Laughing Clowns'' ... which is a bit of a weird thing to say (as if they think he's from overseas), but I did get my hopes up that it meant coming to Adelaide. Oh, well, looks like I'll have to start working out how to get time off to see the LC in Melbourne but it just wasn't possible last time (i.e. the Jazz Festival).

Best day ever!

emiller  said about 2 years ago:

SURE IS!
Got my Laneway Melbourne ticket, and Sydney ticket. Might go to at least 3-4/8. Day trip to Hobart, Adelaide. This band is special, wouldn't for any other.

mrmagoo  said about 2 years ago:

how much are the tickets?

emiller  said about 2 years ago:

Which ones mrmagoo?

__v  said about 2 years ago:

Sydney was $65 + bf.

emiller  said about 2 years ago:

Melbourne Forum gig: 52+, according to liveguide.

__v  said about 2 years ago:

Sydney show must be cheaper 'cos it's subsidsed by the Sydney Festival.

Oh, hang on...

emiller  said about 2 years ago:

__v: ''Was'' - Sydney gig is sold out?

__v  said about 2 years ago:

Nup, it ''was'' as in ''I have already bought my ticket so am thinking about the price in past tense''.

Sorry for confusion.

mrmagoo  said about 2 years ago:

yeah was wondering about the Melbourne and Brisbane prices

emiller  said about 2 years ago:

Oh ok.
So, there might be a slight discrepancy, but they'll probably all be around that range.
