In Brief: FBi Benefit, Tropicália Tribute, The Boroughs

Three FBi radio shows – New Weird Australia, Unputdownable and Sunday Night At The Movies – will band together for a benefit gig on November 7. “Unpopular Music”, at Sydney’s Red Rattler, will feature performances by 12 experimental acts including Pimmon (pictured) and Jeff Burch (playing solo sets and a one-off live collaboration), Comatone, Kyu, Anon, Scissor Lock, Anna Chase and Nick Wishart. All proceeds from the gig go directly to FBi, which is still seeking funds to secure its long-term financial viability … Six acts will celebrate the 1960s Brazilian cultural movement Tropicália at a Melbourne International Arts Festival event tomorrow (October 24). Sophie Brous, Bum Creek, The French, Pikelet, Francis Plagne and Jens Lekman will reinterpret songs from Tropicália: ou Panis et Circenses – a 1968 compilation album that’s widely considered the movement’s musical manifesto – at ACMI, Federation Square. The performance will be followed by screenings of a documentary on Tropicália and a Brazilian feature film from that period. Doors: 2pm. Tickets here … Acts including Bertie Blackman, Hot Little Hands, Yves Klein Blue and the Frowning Clouds will perform at “The Boroughs”, an event inspired by New York’s gritty street culture. Also featuring visual artists, skaters, DJs and thrift stores, the event will take place in an abandoned Melbourne warehouse dubbed (you guessed it) “The Factory” on December 6. First release tickets: $45 available from the M+N shop.

New York has a 'gritty' street culture?

Bullshit. Maybe in 1984. These days the Manhattan or Booklyn streets are full of hipsters wearing bumbags and vintage Pierre Cardin windbreakers., or dime-a-dozen wiggas in gold chains and Reebok Pump reissues. What's gritty about that?

Talk about the cultural cringe. It's NEW YORK!

YEAH, NEW YORK CITY IN THE USA! IT'S COOL!

Maybe in WIlliamsburg they are having something similar to celebrate Melbourne s ''cafe culture''

Hahahaha. This Boroughs thing is soooo hilarious. To quote;

''Culture permeates through the gritty streets of New York; etched into its cast-iron skin, graffittied on its greystone walls and smelt as it blows through the melting pot of the Five Boroughs; Staten Island, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and The Bronx. ItâÂÄÂôs this sentiment of subversive culture, expressed through street art and music, that is about to rock MelbourneâÂÄÂôs underbelly with the arrival of an off-the-hook music and arts event known as The Boroughs.

Sheltered in an abandoned city warehouse, The Boroughs is an event which celebrates creative movement, forging AustraliaâÂÄÂôs most urgent bands and djâÂÄÂôs with visual artists, bootlegger bars, skaters and thrift stores.

Featuring live performances by NY inspired acts; Bertie Blackman, Miami Horror, Yves Klein Blue, Hot Little Hands, Bachelor of Arts, Frowning Clouds, Wilfred Jackal and The Hello Morning, The Boroughs is poised to rupture the yoke of social boundaries, heralding the start of your self-expressive summer.''

Emphasis on;

''Featuring live performances by NY inspired acts''

Hahahahahaha. God.

I can't even begin to describe how retarded this is. Talk about perpetuating the myth of Australia as a backwater.
