The finalists have been announced for this year’s Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards (SOYAs), a grants program for emerging creatives. In the music category, Oh Mercy (pictured), Songs and Sherlock’s Daughter will duke it out for a mentorship program, as well as $5000 in cash and $5000 in flights courtesy of Qantas. The trio were selected by SOYA music mentor and Modular boss Stephen “Pav” Pavlovic who had these insightful words to say: “Songs: I really like their vibe and they possess a naivety and genuine sincerity that reminds me of some of my favorite bands. Wicked! Sherlock’s Daughter: there’s some really cool elements going on in here, atmospheric and hypnotic, two of my favourite sweets. Oh Mercy: these guys have a well developed sense of songwriting and a killer vocal that keeps me coming back for more.” Thanks Pav. Winners will be announced at a ceremony at Sydney’s Museum of Contemporary Art on November 11. Past SOYA winners have included My Disco, Wolf & Cub and the now-defunct Young & The Restless … Voting has opened for the annual EG Awards, which will take place on November 20 at the Prince of Wales Bandroom in Melbourne. Nominees include Wagons, Rowland S Howard, Paul Dempsey, Pikelet, Tex Perkins, Wolf & Cub, The Temper Trap, Jen Cloher, Dappled Cities, The Dacios, Leader Cheetah and St Helens. not to seem like a cunt or nothin, but songs aren't really what i'd call 'youth'
seems the spirit of youth is for those aged 30 and under!
Or older with a certain Songs isn't it?
