Sydney’s Hopetoun Forced To Shut

Sydney’s Hopetoun Hotel has shut it doors until further notice. In a letter circulated yesterday (September 28), director Evangelos Patakas said the venue needed to undertake “significant works” in accordance with local council requirements.

“We regret to advise that we must therefore cancel all future shows booked to play at the Hopetoun as from today,” he said. “We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding at this difficult time.”

M+N has sought comment from management, but cosmetic and security issues are believed to be behind the venue’s closure. The news comes as small venues in Melbourne are being put under pressure by new regulations requiring security guards be present at all gigs.

In response, the Sydney music community has rallied around the Surry Hills institution, starting a Facebook group, a Twitter page and a blog which calls on Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore to save the iconic pub.

“Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated. The City of Sydney's music scene would suffer a great loss without this legendary venue.”

Do they require bouncers to be present at venues littered with fuckhead finance boys who get the itch for high school rugby and start fights on George St at 3am?

Make action simple for us and we'll do it. For example give us an inking of how much $ is needed + a bsb and account number and we can donate funds into it. Add the bsb/account to all articles/ facebook / twitter etc.

Sounds like this security/onerous regulation of music venues that play original live music is a NSW/Vic issue - any other states doing this? I heard an old timers dance for senior citizens that had been going for decades in the country was cancelled because they had to supply security but none could be found within driving distance. Those senior cits get lethally violent when the scones come out...
