Music industry conference hogs Sydney and Brisbane can’t have all the fun, can they? Following Brisbane’s Big Sound and Sydney’s AustralAsian Music Business Conference, Face The Music – Melbourne’s only industry talkfest – will take place on October 31 at the Arts Centre. The difference: you’re not going to have to sell your organs to get there.
The all-day all-ages event, which costs $20, will feature interactive panel discussions, keynote presentations, one-on-one artist development interviews and practical workshops. Speakers include Steph Hughes from Home & Hosed and Jaymz Clements from Beat magazine on music publicity; Kirsty Rivers (APRA), Jonathan Williamson (Victoria Rocks) and Nick O’Byrne (AIR/JB Seed) on grant-writing; Jaddan Commerford (Destroy All Lines), Ben Rynderman (Obese Records) and Bonnie Dalton (manager, Little Red) on setting up an indie label; and Rebecca Laubi from Arts Law Centre of Australia, who will be providing speed dating-style legal consultations throughout the day.
Jen Cloher (pictured with the Endless Sea) and her team of personnel including Nicole Jones (Teclo) and Rob Scott (Sandcastle Records) will be using her new album Hidden Hands as a case study for promoting and marketing an indie release. Musicians will also have the opportunity to seek song-writing advice from Charles Jenkins.
Limited tickets available through theartscentre.com.au.
