Australia’s rock’n’roll community is in mourning after the death of Magic Dirt bass player Dean Turner. Turner was reportedly suffering from a rare form of deep tissue cancer. He was 37.
Turner co-founded Magic Dirt with Adalita Srsen, drummer Adam Robertson and guitarist Daniel Herring in Geelong in 1992. But the band’s roots can be traced back even further – to jam sessions between Turner and Adalita in his parents’ garage. “It took a few years and a few incarnations of the band to make the music that we wanted to make,” Turner told M+N in a 2007 interview. “We were going to see bands on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night every week and we wanted to write scary music.”
In addition to his work with Magic Dirt, Turner produced records by theredsunband, Bit By Bats, Gersey and Violent Soho. He recently finished work on Adalita's debut solo album.
Magic Dirt were scheduled to play shows in Bendigo and Melbourne this weekend but cancelled “due to circumstances beyond the band’s control”. The band has not yet made an official statement.
Turner is survived by his wife Linda and two daughters.
UPDATE: A statement from Magic Dirt will be issued tomorrow (August 25).

Heard this when I was at RRR yesterday, 37 is too young to die of cancer.
Quite sad. 37 is too young to die full-stop TimChuma...sadly, even children die from cancer.
many mess and noisers have been posting here
I grew up listening to these guys and loved what he did as a producer.... Really sad news.
Friends and i were so looking forward to seeing MD on Friday night - almost a year to the day we last saw them play at the same venue, when Dean's spot had to be filled in by someone else due to his illness. We'd hoped he was better. This is such sad news, and awful for his wife and daughters. RIP. : (
