Steele Teams Up With Jay-Z

In one of the most improbable pairings since Ryan Adams and Mandy Moore tied the knot, Empire of the Sun’s Luke Steele will appear on the forthcoming Jay-Z record.

Steele is among an illustrious list of A-listers including Rihanna, Kanye West, Pharrell, Alicia Keys, Kid Cudi and Drake (can you spot the odd one out here?) on Jay-Z’s forthcoming new album The Blueprint 3. He will appear alongside the US hip-hop mogul on first track, ‘What We Talkin’ About’. (Think you're missing an "are" there, Jay-Z).

And if Jay-Z’s touch wasn’t midas enough, two Empire of the Sun tracks – ‘Standing On The Shore’ and ‘We Are The People’ – will feature on season six of hit HBO series Entourage.

Empire of the Sun – Steele minus the guy from Pnau – will make their debut at Parklife next month. Meanwhile, Jay-Z’s The Blueprint 3 will be out on September 11.

Fucking absurd. I heard about this yesterday.

''I got 99 problems and Luke Steel is one - hit me!''

Guarantees another mediocre Jay-Z album. Sigh.

untold/animals  said about 2 years ago:

He did say a bitch ain't one, but maybe the implication was that he wanted to rectify the situation.

mathieson  said about 2 years ago:

Steele is really going to outdo himself with Empire of the Sun's live show - he has sole control, he has a large budget, and willing collaborators in various disciplines.

A epochal Fail is on the cards.

MGMT on the record as well... this is shaping up to be worse than the Chris Martin stuff on Kingdom Come.

I quite like steel luke now. No genius by any stretch, but I can't say any success he has is undeserved. Plus, he's been playing the eccentric so long he's almost a proper eccentric now.

grogblog  said about 2 years ago:

i should be surprised, but jay z should NOT be putting out albums anymore, so they can eat shit together.

also, they didn't even write any of those empire of the sun songs, right? isn't all ghostwritten by the cuntbag in sneaky sound system? so if you find some top 10 jerk to write you songs and dress up like some other hit 'alt' act of the time, you too can be a cunt on a jay z piece of shit. celebrate.

bigdaddykane  said about 2 years ago:

I think that rather than an 'are' missing, there's a missing 'Willis'.

anonymous  said about 2 years ago:

this is out and about if anyone cares.

trafficsounds  said about 2 years ago:

i was curious about the song at the very least. which you stream via stereogum on this page

josejones  said about 2 years ago:

it's so heavily treated i'm wondering why he even bothered getting steele in the studio for that.

Wonsly  said about 2 years ago:

I wonder if luke went to record with jz or just emailed him his vox?

trafficsounds  said about 2 years ago:

from this mtv story (also linked in the stereogum piece)

So Jay's people called Luke's people, and they asked him to jump on a jet to New York for sessions, but because Steele couldn't get a flight out of Perth, Australia, on time, the track was sent to him instead. ''I tracked it all day, for 12 hours, and then I sent it back,'' he said. ''I was a bit nervous, wondering what everyone thought, and Jay-Z called me at 3 in the morning, and he said he loved it.''

Steele — whose brilliance has also been shouted out by the track's producer, Kanye West, on his blog several times — said he took the original hook of ''Shore'' from the band's 2008 Walking on a Dream debut album and did his usual studio manipulation on it. ''It's just whatever comes to mind,'' he said. ''I added some reverse [vocals] and wrote a Neptunes-y, Beach Boys melody on the chorus, and it turned out to be great.''
