While major labels are busy busting students for sharing a few tracks, a Melbourne indie has come up with a unique way of combating piracy.
Hobbledehoy Record Co has teamed up with recently launched startup Gimmiesound.com to offer legal, virus-free, high-quality MP3s of complete albums across their discography at no cost. Artists will be paid by the revenue generated from site advertising and Gimmesound will be donating two percent of net revenue to a charitable cause of the listeners’ choice. In turn, Hobbledehoy hopes that in previewing the music online, listeners will then purchase physical copies on CD and vinyl at its online store. Bands available for download include the recently defunct Blueline Medic (pictured), Arrows, The City On Film, The Leap Year and Oh Messy Life.
Hobbledehoy Record Co was founded by Tom Majerczak in his Ivanhoe bedroom. It still operates out of there today.
