Liam Finn Together/Alone With Eliza Jane

Mess+Noise’s favourite Finn, Liam, is back with beard intact and a new EP, Champagne in Seashells. Finn the Junior, (who was obviously caught in ‘extremely literal mode’) has described his new EP as a ‘document of a small moment in time’ which is the kind of dense, allusive, utterly meaningless description we think only Greil Marcus could truly love.
Perhaps he’s just referring to the busy two years since the release of his critically acclaimed debut album I’ll Be Lightning and uninterrupted touring he has assumed as a substitute for normal life since then?
Champagne in Seashells is apparently ‘bigger and bolder, revealing new lyrical complexities and pointing in daring new musical directions’. We’re guessing that means it sounds like another early Elliot Smith record then.
The EP is notable for another reason as well – it marks the debut studio collaboration between Liam and live cohort Eliza-Jane. The self-produced EP was mixed by Tchad Blake (Tom Waits, Gomez, Pearl Jam).
Liam and EJ are back touring Australia (and then the world) in September, supported by Leader Cheetah.
Champagne In Seashells is released on September 4.

yay. and props to liam for touring to newcastle as well!
Im no Liam Finn fan but its kind of annoying reading these mess and noise articles which try way too hard to sound cool and cycical.
agreed pants. not everything has to be negative in approach.
and i must be greil marcus, because i think it's a brilliant description.
Which part is cynical? Maybe I've read this site for too long that I am immune to it all.
yeah, i agree with pants... plus it is not at all an ''extremely literal'' description...he is not neccessarily referring to the time spent recording the e.p.
he could be talking about the subject matter or any number of things...
the same description could be apply to ''leaps and bounds'' or ''how to make gravy'' by paul kelly....
Who is writing lately anyway?
Yeah, tone down the cynicism. It sounds tryhard. Music journalism doesn't need to be acerbic. Particularly when it sounds fake.
plus, in no way does the last album sound anything like early elliott smith.
early elliott smith is four-track, rough guitar, tape hiss and double tracked hushed vocals...the liam album is quite layered, has a lot of varied instrumentation and, well, doesn't resemble it whatsoever..
Do you think the T is silent in Tchad Blake?
what about the photoshop hatchet job?
Nice cardigans!
and yeah, why doesn't the uber-cynic writing this stuff have the cojones to put their name to it?
Funny how it says ''The self-produced EP was mixed by Tchad Blake (Tom Waits, Gomez, Pearl Jam).''
No mention of the work he's done with Neil Finn, Tim Finn, Finn Brothers, Crowded House...
I wondered if it was a vanity 'T'.
Wow, this EP kicks arse!!! <3 Liam.
