Pop genius Charles Jenkins is providing a wintry treat for chilly Melburnians this week, when he takes over the Corner Hotel this Saturday, 4 July with the Blue Atlas Winter Ball.
Providing a line-up that could warm the cockles of even the coldest heart (yes, we’re looking at you Chris from Masterchef), Jenkins and his backing band The Zhivagos will tackle the string-saturated song cycle with the help of some friends. People who Chuck calls ‘friends’ include Tim Rogers, Davey Lane, Spencer P Jones, Clare Bowditch, Anna Burley, Abby Dobson, Kerri Simpson and Cal and Van Walker. Sucks to be Chuck, we agree. Oh, and he’s kindly decided to make sure all those swooning string sections sound just right by getting the Blue Atlas Strings to join him as well.
Jenkins snuck up on quite a few of people late last year with an absolute corker of an album, Blue Atlas. It’s been something of a slow-burn success, propelled along by word-of-mouth and some glowing reviews. On Saturday, he’ll be performing the album in full and Jenkins and the band might just get around to bashing out a few of their favourite songs from those special friends as well.
Tickets are $20 plus booking fee and are still available from the Corner 11am-8pm Mon-Sat, (03) 9427 9198 or from the online Corner Box Office.

IT'S SATURDAY.
Sorry, change didn't go through and I drafted it whilst recovering from a dodgy kebab from the newly opened Hasir Kebabs on Smith Street across the road from Cavallero.
Not recommended ...
Anyway, change coming - SATURDAY 4 JULY.
I love you, Bos(s).
a true melbourne treasure. and a gentleman and a scholar to boot. if i can get it together, i would be on the last available plane to get there...
particularly when i got the email from him announcing a couple of extras for the evening...
i hate you, melbourne. there, i said it....
Should be a ripper night - I can't wait....
Will be an awesome night.
Can't wait to see what songs are gonna be played on the night.......
Would love to be there, but will be drinking snake bile in Hong Kong. Go Chuck! Go Arty!!
ex M&Ner Fulton Girls Club (aka Cougar Flashy) is playing at this too, at Chuck's invitation!
This is going to be grand. Blue Atlas is a fantastic album, and Chuck's got a stellar list of guests too!
Anyone else attending this tonight?
I cant decide outta this or the tote
I'll be there with a tie on!
Ha, so you are both dressing up then!?
See you there, monkey.
Yup. Are you dressing up?
I'm shooting this tonight for Dust Devil Music. It gonna be a great event. :)
It's being filmed? Then we all need to look our best!
I'll also be wearing a (bow) tie.
Tim Rogers wiped the sweat from my brow.
You lucky robot.
Well, that was some of the most appaling sound I have ever heard at a gig. People left in droves during the intermission.
Really, pops? I got a couple of texts last night saying it was awesome. Or was that more about the idea than the execution?
highlights?
The performances were great, but the sound throughout the the first half was woeful.
The vocals sounded like people were singing into a concrete tank and were then distorted or fedback whenever the volume increased.
The keys were distorting and feedbacking, which drowned out everything else. The strings were barely audible, which was probably the biggest shame of the night.
They got it right after the break, but it was obviously a little too late for a few people.
I didn't think it was the right venue for the night. Not enough room on stage and clearly the mix was all wrong. Perhaps somewhere like the Thornbury Theatre would've been a better fit.
It would have been an amazing night if it wasn't for that mix. The amount of brutal stares in the direction of the desk was hilarious.
It was a lot better in the second half for the rock songs, but some of my favourite slower chuck songs were ruined by feedback and tinny vocals.
I was right up the front, and couldn't hear the FoH. I thought it sounded great.
The FOH sound was so terrible it totally ruined what could have been a really amazing night.
Instead of enjoying it, the whole first half was spent trying to decipher lyrics and covering ears from the harshness of the tones coming off stage.
I don't think the performers had any idea what was going on out front, because they seemed genuinely chuffed and were all putting in great efforts, but it was impossible for them to engage the crowd at all with that awful sound.
Such a shame.
Oh, but Ron Peno was bar far the highlight!
Kind of like Van Morrison in The Last Waltz - a little guy who just comes on an d owns the stage and the room in an instant.
And Spencer, and the big version of 'Walk On' from On the Beach.
Bar far, and by far.
I agree with the sound... pity..... but stay tuned for an announcement about a Sydney Ball and a Christmas Ball.... and a wicked venue!!!!
