A few drops of drizzle and the sight of Wally Meanie in footy shorts certainly didn’t deter punters from Sunday’s Community Cup at Elsternwick Park. After a year-long hiatus, the event attracted an estimated 6500 people, raising more than $120,000 for charity sponsor Reclink.

Footy enthusiasts were treated to a hotly contested match between community radio stations Triple R and PBS 106.7FM (collectively known as “The Megahertz”) and local musicians (“The Espy Rockdogs”), who ran out eventual winners: 8.8 (56) to 8.7 (55). Full report here.

Award winners included: Sam Pang (Steve Connelly Medal for Best On Ground); Tim Rogers (Ian Rilen Medal for Best Community Cup Veteran); Jason Evans (David McComb Medal for Most Courageous Rockdog); Phil Gionfriddo (Paul Hester Medal for Cheekiest Player); Ally Spazzy (Tim Hemensley Medal for Rockingest Rockdog); and Adrian Basso and Mick James (Kath Letch Medal for Service To Community Radio/The Community Cup).

Proceeds raised at the event will go to Reclink, whose mission is to provide sport and arts activities to enhance the lives of people experiencing disadvantage.

That accounts for about $32,500 - and double that from alcohol sales!

and better queuing systems for the MG tent too! just some guides/barricades so that no one can butt in near the top of the line when it stretches all the way down the hill to the fence and around the corner.
